depending on how much or little money you want to spend, here are two thoughts (which I am in the process of testing out myself.)
A used Meek MC3 or MQ3 can be had for $150 - $250 on ebay depending on the competition. This will give you a single mic preamp with compression and EQ built in. If you decide that the preamp does not suit your needs, or you outgrow it, you can just use the unit as an inserted compressor and/or EQ.
**again, I am just getting mine set up, so I do not speak from experience, but thus far, my plan is working fine... I was also able to get a nice sound from the unit plugged inline between my strat and my twin**
The suggestion for a nice compressor would be the FMR RNC which can be had for $175 - $200 brand new, shipped either from Mercenanry Audio or Humbucker Music. I am using mine as an insert in and out of my Aardvark Q10. I understand that it can also be plugged into many popular mixing boards.
Now, if you eventually get the FMR RNP (which may be the next thing that I purchase - after I get comfortable with the meek and the RNC), you will be able to use the RNC as an insert to that. Shoot, just about any of the sub $500 pre's will give you the ability to insert the RNC.
Hope this is of some help. If you want additional info, let me know and I will keep you in the loop on my progress.

-----Warning, thread being hijacked here-----
I am curious what the popular opinion is about the Presonus VXP? I am thinking my next purchase may be an RNP or the VXP or the new oneQ coming from the people at Meek.
Anyone have any thoughts about these items?
Thanks in advance.
