Hello so I had a Shure SM58 laying around and I thought it might be fun to use as a computer microphone. I hooked it up to the computers mic-in and it works. Main problem is I need to hold it really close to my mouth and speak fairly loud. I'm assuming I need a preamp of some sort. So my question is would a preamp make it able to pick up my voice about a foot away? if not what might do the job? And any product suggestions?

yup, you need some sort of audio interface.

the mic-in port on an on-board soundcard is made for those $3 electret computer mics.
A dynamic mic like a 57 or 58 needs more gain.
