shipping gear?

i put this in here because it's equipment related, hopefully the logic is ok :)

anyway.. i need to ship a bunch of music gear to hawaii and i'm having absolutely no luck finding a company to do it.

i am about to resort to the us mail or ups/fed-ex type of places..

does anybody have any experience in moving gear, especially to hawaii?

i could use some help before i flip out from frustration.

Don't airlines/planes do the cargo shipping thing?

you are allowed a couple of pieces of luggage each, and they have weight limits, like 50 lbs. extra baggage or heavier stuff will cost a lot more.

i think that may be new since 9/11.. i know they did limit the amount and type of stuff they will ship.

it seems like touring bands have been stuffing the bottoms of planes with gear for a long time, but maybe they can afford it.. we always begged, borrowed and stole backlines. all i ever had to deal with was small stuff.

im shipping an ampeg 8x10, a few combos and heads, about 10 guitars, 3 full sized electric pianos/organs, 3 computers w 20' to 32' lcd's, a couple of racks, pedal boards, etc.

and that's just what i'm lookin at right now.. i got a ton of other stuff i may or may not take, depends on the pricing.

i basically need like a bathroom sized box to stuff to the gills. heh.

my head is about to explode from this whole thing.
 
I mean Cargo shipping.

I could be wrong - but I think it's worth a call to the airlines - but I'm pretty sure that airlines will let you ship big stuff "cargo" on the airplanes. You don't have to be a passenger.

32 foot monitor, eh?

That's a big freakin monitor. Even if it were 32 inches, you've still got a ton of shit man... FedEx or UPS might be ridiculously expensive, but most likely cheaper to do than trying to bring it with ya on a plane... Apparently the tactic for stopping terrorism on planes is make it reaaaally expensive to ship things like bombs with you on the plane...

lol yeah i was too lazy to hit shift.. if i had a 32 foot lcd i would never leave the house and wouldn't neeed to ship anything anywhere.. ever..

but seriously.. all the stuff i have isn't even close to even a small band's full backline and setup. pretty much just a moderate home studio and band gear, all of which fits in one room right now.

we're talking about less than a van's worth of gear by way less.

believe me i wish i could afford to ship everything i own or have access too. it's all being given out to old band mates etc. this is just what i will need for live shows and recording right away.
 
How much you looking to spend?
Have you called UPS, Fedex and those others to see what it would cost?

i'm hoping to spend around 1000 bux, maybe 1500ish.

i can carry on a couple of things, and i will most likely ship the guitars separately one by one.

i am thinking i will have to use fed ex, ups or just the post office for a lot of it..

it's funny tho.. i keep hearing about all these great easy ways from people over there.. but no actual contact with a company that can do it.

no matter what happens i can just mail the stuff over.. it will be a hassle to do it all separately tho. and i may not be able to afford to ship much that way.

im gonna call more places tomorrow, i was hoping sometime tonight someone would see this who knows of the magic number to call that will fix all my problems.. because google doesn't seem to know it.

man i've dealt with both of those places. thanks tho.

they charge you to send some jackasses out to load the crap for you... i'm all the jackass i need to pack the stuff up. i just need the ocean going vessel from them.

i can't believe how much total bullshit is involved with this whole thing.

it's more trouble than its worth.

i actually just got off the phone with the one company there, my wife must have asked the wrong questions.. because they do provide boxes to fill, so im stoked that i can go thru them no matter what.

thanks for all the replies folks.

one less thing to worry about.. i can focus on worrying about the rest of it now :)
