Does anyone know anything about the recording school in Tempe, AZ called the Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences? HAs anyone attended or heard anything from anyone? What is the average salary of a recording engineer or producer? I planning on attending this school and i need to know what others think about it. I need feedback from everyone please. Should recording be a career or left as a hobby? What kind of a job could this school get me? PLease give me your feedback.

Thanks

Trent

Hello and welcome zenkitty. The most you'll recieve as far as advice is concerned are simply opinions about the plusses
and minuses of attending recording schools. I,myself won't even waste your time with my opinion.
Why not try and use the "SEARCH" function of this BBS located on the upper rite-hand corner of this page. There you will find a wealth of statements in regards to your request.
Peace

Hello Zenkitty, Dont know about the school.
As for the other questions?

Average salary? No such thing in the Music biz. Don
Was makes lots of money. Most people dont. Think
low.

Should recording be a career or a hobby? It depends
on your situation. Do you want stability, normal
hours, health, life insurance, 401Ks, paid vacations,
sick days, etc? If so, dont get involved in the
music biz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a pro violinist, not an engineer, so I am not
an expert on that field. However, I am an expert
I guess on being a musician. I am 36, been pro
since I was 14, never did anything except violin
(in college I worked 3 days at a chinese restuarant).

My hours are insane, I travel a lot, have no
weekends, my violin cost as much as a small
house, with my education and experience, I would
make 10 times as much in another field. I dont
even know what a 401K IS, I have no pension, etc.

Time to switch jobs? Of course not, its a great
job. I didnt choose it, it chose me. I play the
violin for a living; if I won the lotto tomorrow,
I would still play the violin for a living. I will
do this til I die, I have no choice, its what
I am.

If you feel like this, go for it. If you feel
like this 99%, run like holy hell and be an
accountant.

A common joke in the biz:

Q. What's the difference between a Musician and
a sixteen inch pizza?

A. The pizza can feed a family of four.

Cheers, David

YO ZEN-MEOW:

I do know of guy who went to that school in Arizona. He thought it was very well run and enjoyed staying there a couple of terms.

Don't know what the kid is doing now; last time I heard he was still jamming.

Suggest an electronic music course at a Junior college in your area. We have one here in Grand Rapids. I haven't taken the course but a singer friend of mine did and loved it. Also, the cost is very reasonable.

If you've got the cash, Arizona is nice during the winter.

David's post is probably very true. But, music is so damn much fun....

hey zenkitty,
i live in az and i know some instructors at the conservatory. it is a good school they have a real good placement too. its probably one step down from full sail. now about ur ? on what u can make in the recording world, i dont think thats the reason u should goto school u should goto school because u love recording and cant stop thinking about it, and since u love it why not perfect ur love and make money from it. but if ur just looking for a cool job......well imho thats not a good reason.

i say before you spend your money on school buy some recording gear like a 4track,see if you like recording read a lot of recording books to see if you can pick it up and if you really like it go digital. i guess what iam trying to say is the same thing jal said do it because you love it beside this way if you feel this is not for you then you can sell your equipment if you goto school and say you did not like it you wasted a lot of money.

I dunno, but ive heard that schools arnt always worth attending for audio stuff. most of the stuff in audio you have to learn by experience anyway, and they rest you can learn off the internet or by books. but i have never attended one so i couldnt tell you.
