Save space on your computer and get better playback!

I know... I know... This is probably a no brainer but I'm sure there's some people who don't know yet.

Anyway... here it is!

Instead of saving your session audio files as .WAV files... Save them as the highest quality .MP3 you can get! Actually, in Cool Edit Pro 2.0, there is a setting for Highest Quality... Use that. This will take a 50mb file and change it to (about) a 4.5mb file! Your hard drive will love you and your playback will be smoother. Plus, the playback won't distort.

And, when you want to backup your files to a CD, you can do so without using multiple disks or using major compression.

Id rather spend the money for a larger harddrive than go mixing and distributing MP3's.
Or even better..if you dont have that much harddrive space..and dont want to install another harddrive...get a DVD burner and store sessions on DVD's. You can store TONS of .wavs on a DVD. Besides...I dont have any problem with distortion during playback...and i dont i have heard anyone else complain of that either.

same here. Once you compress a .wav into an mp3, it can never be restored to the same resolution again. I don't like the idea of using high-resolution digital recording gear and then throwing away half of the audio. It's like recording on a 2" tape deck and then "archiving" your masters on 10-for-a-dollar cassettes. Get the DVD burner: I just got one for $80 with a $30 rebate (and I am sure there are better deals around).

This is definetely a bad idea, you would be degrading your audio files and have no ability to ever recover the quality.

MP3 and other "lossy" compression schemes are a one way street in the audio quality department.

Uhhhhh... No! Its not true! I have mixed a whole song into .mp3's and the sound quality is just as good, if not better, than .WAVs. I said HIGHEST QUALITY .mp3's. If you haven't tried it, don't knock it. It works... And well!

i suppose if you are just recording demos and bit and pieces that arent serious the MP3 option is there. but if you are recording proper stuff. MP3 just isnt an option. They arent the same quality, Wavs and MP3's. No matter how good the MP3 sounds it will never have the depth and resolution of the WAV. compression is killing a lot of the sound. If you cant hear it it doesnt mean its just as good.

I checked and mine is actually 40+40 internal and 40+80+80 external. The shop that put my computer together wanted to do 2X80 internal but I wanted a mechanism to force me to archive to external drive (when everything's 96KHz, I may have to change my mind). Then I put a second 80G drive on my graphics machine for what, $70?

All of this is irrelevant if you just gotta have that iPod sound!
