Hi everyone, this just came to my mind...
The idea of room mikes is to capture the reflections of the room instead of the direct sound, right? And is usually an omni mike.
So has anyone tried to use figure 8 mikes for room aiming at the source at 90 degrees for maxium rejection of the direct sound in relation with the reflections?

In that case it would be 'looking toward the sides of the room and rejecting the kit and the room from the 'center'. But why not? Or cardioid looking away from the kit.

It's not just to capture the ambience but a mix of the overall kit and the room. Figure 8 Ribbons are great for room mics. Really whatever sounds good is the right choice. Just move the mic around until it sounds interesting. Compress it in the mix and EQ to taste. Done properly you can dial in the amount of HUGE you want in the drum sound.

A room mike in a crappy room sounds like crap. Room mikes have been used with great results for 50+ years. But until recently they were used in real studios having large dimensions. Not bedroom studios!

I was just reading not too long ago about using two figure-8's aimed just like that for an interesting stereo room capture. I thought it was pretty neat, a nice use of the side-rejection I hadn't thought of. Perhaps some time I'll try it out.

i tracked some drums last week in a large room with 20' ceilings, and used 3 room mics - one LDC about 4' from the kit in omni, and a couple of fig-8 ribbons, each about 8' out from the kit, around 10' high, at a 45 degree angle

needless to say, the room mics sounded really good, and made all the difference in the world

Got any clips?

I love room mics. I think drums usually sound boring without any good room ambience.

i'll see if i can get something up tomorrow

i'm just really bummed, because the guy i got to drum on the sessions didn't bother learning the material very well

it's pretty fucked up...i go to a bunch of trouble to get into a great room, with great gear...i get a fucking great drum sound going on, and then the dude churns out a subpar performance. i'm still debating whether i want to edit the shit out of the tracks that i have, or say fuck it and program the drums.

i guess i'll have to play around for a couple hours and see if i can make lemonade out of the lemons this dude left me.
