Please forgive me, I know this is supposed to be home based recording but this is the closest I could find where it lookined like the people visiting had a clue...

I really only know in studio techniques and have to do some live audio today (yikes)

I really need some tips -

I'm using a dbx 1086 Mic Pre / Processor and a Shure SM57

The place is small and very close to the speacker system :-\ feedback is going to be a problem I think...

What settings should I use to get optimal sound but yet kill feedback

example settings appreciated.

Any info will be better than none so if you have any input please please offer whatever you can

Thanks so much!

Cheers

Yikes! You're gonna have an interesting day. If you're useing a stand alone mic pre/channel strip right into a PA amp and you don't have a dedicated monitor system with it's own EQ and power amp, fighting feedback is not going to be easy. Where you are going to look for feedback EQ wise will depend on the particular room you're in, where in the room the mic is in relation to the speakers and a few other variables. If that strip has a sweepable mid EQ, use a narrow Q and cut it and sweep through the mid range to look for the offending freq. Good luck.

Thanks Track Rat!

The place is a mid sized lounge - crowd volume is going to be high.
The PA they have sux nothing special the speakers they have INHO are WAY toooo huge for the size of the place and are right off the sides of the stage area. all of about 8 feet wide stage area.

The 1086 is going with me because it's all I have to work with usualy in the studio... It doesn't have sweepable EQ...

sigh...

the crapo PA I'll be going into has an overall 12 band EQ on it though I don't really trust it :-\

The room is not tuned and is an audio nightmare of glass, marble, wood. some rug, some tile.

I know this is not going to be easy and am ready for the wors I was just hoping to get some ball park tips on live audio.

Never been outside a studio... Hey at least it's indoors ;-)

is there anything I can do with the dbx 1086 thaat can help, it has the following

Expander/Gate
Compressor
De-Esser
Limiter

I figure I may not be able to stop ALL feedback but at least IF I do get some feedback I can clip it before it swells out of control?

Would like to also have the volume stay as loud as possible without feeding back to stay above the room noise.

any more tips out there?
