Some people are just more patient than others. I give you a lot of credit for the soldering job! I have a hard enough time trying to figure out which 1/4" plug goes where! :-)

And yes, I agree...very nice work on the new desk.
 
Just a quik update. Just finished the mixer side. Now on to the rack ends of the snakes.

Beautiful job Track Rat...

I don't envy you any one bit!! I thought I was going to go absolutely ape#$%^ the last time I had to do one of those puppies. After I finished it I spent the whole next night just staring at it and repeating "It''s done, it''s done..."

Are you going to put a cover over the back of the stand to cover all those "ugly wires"?

BTW, is John's site down again? I couldn't get to it all all.

Anyways, this is the second installment. This may be too much information but here goes. This is an individual jack frame out of the patch bay in a soldering vice soldered up to a cable. When I get all the frames for one bay soldered, then I reassemble them.

Oh yes. Them ugly wires will be completely boxed in when it's done. The carcass I built to hold the mixer, patchbays and BRC forms a bridge to set the nearfields on. That'll be the last thing I assemble so I can get to all the plumbing if I find a problem on the shakedown cruse.:D
 
And I couldn't get to John's site just now either. Must be a glitch.
 
OK. The new equipment racks are in place and wired and the console is sitting where it's going to live.

How do the wires run from the console to the rack?
Is there a trough, or.. how?
 
Not very exotic Michael. The snake just runs from the console on the floor to the racks but it's not in plane sight so it's OK with me.

Track - Again, everything looks awesome. I think you may have mentioned it before but what type of cable are you using for your patchbay & snake? Belden?

I did a bunch of soldering recently but what you've done is absolutely difficult and time consuming.
What you've done looks absolutely great. The only thing I would do if you don't mind me saying is protect that wiring on the floor. That could possibly be your weak link. All that work might be usless. I am sure you are very careful around them but someone else might not be so forgiving.
Looks great how you ran all the wires in unison(perfect arrangement). Running wires like that sets you up for low noise. Assuming you didn't run any power cords with it. Yeah perpendicular is the way if there is no other way to run the two together.
I remember you saying something about not using GFCI's in the studio. Well now I am going to replace all the receptacles with regular receptacles. I have two dedicated circuits running to the garage both have 15amp breakers and 14 awg wiring. I would like to pull new wiring. And change the awg to 12 awg and run dedicated grounds. Then change the breaker to 20 amp. Is this theoretical?

I hear ya, Track! I can relate. But on the plus side, your work is turning out excellent! You KNOW it'll be worth all the aggravation in the long run. Kudos to your skill and patience. You got ME beat! :-)
 
I thank you gentlemen. Let me tell you a LONG story that happened today. I soldered up the last of the connections between the HD24 and the console. I have to back up a bit here, the inputs to the console from the HD24 are through the mic inputs (this is per the M-3500 manual) as this is the only inputs that are balanced and will handle the +4 level (with the trim all the way down and the pad engaged). Now this gave me great concern as mic inputs have the possibility of PHANTOM POWER. I gave this a lot of thought and procedded to solder up the XLRs to go into the console via the mic inputs and told myserlf I'd be REAL carefull. So I'm working on the beast and got side tracked into another disaster (my girlfriend has an absessed tooth) and I get back into the beast and I want to hear some playback so I plugs the big power cord in the wall and hit the big switch and everything lights up, I hit play on the HD of an existing recording and something doesn't sound right somewhere. I suddenly get a very bad feeling and I start scanning up and down the row of power buttons at the top of the channel strips and sure enough, 6 random phantom poer buttons are engaged! FUCK!!!!!!! I kill, power, turn off the phantom power on the offending channels and power back up and start soloing tracks one at a time to make sure all is well. I solo channel 6 and there's next to no audio coming through. At this point I decide it's time for a cocktail and to start making up some new cuss words cause all the ones I know just seem inadequate some how for the situation at hand. I'm ready to peal the HD24 out of the rack for some repair work cause I'm sure I've fried a chanel or 6 in it. After a Scooby Snack or 15, I dive into confirming my worst fears with some carefull trouble shooting. To make a long story short, I traced the no audio problem on channel 6 to a insert connector that was shorting a pin to the housing and NOTHING is fried inside the HD24. At this point I decide to relieve myself in my pants ( I love the smell of trouser chilli in the morning) and take a little break from marathon soldering for a bit. The bottom line is, after the slight fuck up, all is well and everything works so far, including my bowels.:eek:

Glad to hear it wasn't fried. Nothing is worse than busting your butt to make things better only to fry something. Been there done that. I KNOW that feeling. Deep in the pit of your stomach, all the way to your brain... :eek: .AAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRR!! AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
