many good suggestions here. i was gonna suggest that you have a mic that is backed off a little bit. you want the levels up AND the singer to be loud. if the screamer is right up in the mic the levels have to be down... i scream into mics from about 3' and that can work well.
in terms of mixing the compressed screaming with less compressed singing, how about recording two versions, and then cut and pasting them together? it's cheating in some purist way, but then you get the best of both worlds and you don't have to worry about the technical complications of two mics, bleeding, and crap like that.
record the whole vocal performance with both settings, and there you go. vocals are often easy to edit like that.
