Recording monitors

i think it would be helpful if you told us your setup :D

Those are passive speakers so you will need an amp which can get pretty expensive, you might consider powered speakers. And yes more info on your particular setup and space would help.

Well, I'm going purely on speculation here. So here's my likely worthless advice for you.

Those would probably be pretty good for what you're doing if you have a suitable amp. However, if not the active version of those same monitors, the B2031As, would be affordable and suitable. They have more wattage than anything else in the size or price range by far. And they don't get a ton of overwhelming low end. If you want to use your monitors for tracking, especially if tracking loud guitars or drums while listening, you'll need this amount of power. Smaller less powerful speakers would be driven much harder, and it's just too easy to ruin studio monitors. They're just not meant to be used as live monitors. Again, they are cheap and if you want to upgrade later down the road, you're not out much money, and you'll probably just find a different use for these, or keep them as a second reference point that you have learned over time.

Yo Sisko...

I'm gonna go a bit off topic here but have you considered room treatment? I realize you're gonna need monitors and it's a good thing to get the best you can afford but it will make a MUCH bigger difference if you acoustically treat your room first.

If you can't hear what's Really goin on, ya can't fix it. Know what I mean?

Do you have a dedicated place that you mix? If not, you can make some temporary / removeable bass traps that will really help your mixing.

Just my thoughts.

I really have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to this; im slowly learning as I go along.

I do have a dedicated space for mixing.

Right now I just play the recording back through my computer speakers (5.1 setup) so I would like something that is actually meant to be for studio recording/playback.

What are my options?
-Powered monitors
-amp and monitors?

Well, you do have a ton of options. There are "monitors" that will work decently from a couple of hundred pezzutos and UP. You really don't need a lot of money for monitors. I've had 4 upgrades with monitors and all of them worked well.

Don't know if you'll be recording with Reverb, EQ, and/or dynamics and/or L/R with stereo, etc.

But, it doesn't matter if you start recording. You'll pick up the parts as you go along. Lots of nice folks here to help you try and answer questions.

Power monitors can work, as well as passive. I haven't mentioned any brand names; pick something and you will get info from anyone who uses a brand or a reference to a reasonable piece of gear.

Good luck and enjoy your music.

I'll have to go with what 89gtsleeper has said about the active model. I own a pair of the 1st generation (now discontinued) B2031 active behringer truth monitors and they are really good for the price.
Because they are powered, no need to worry about what amp to buy that will match impedences, won't colour the sound, introduce noise, etc.

....you can worry about that at a later date should you wish to update.

One thing you will have to watch when you're recording (if you're not in a separate room to the monitors) is spill into and feedback from any mics set up in the room.
I'd recommend that if you're using the one room for both recording & mixing, record with headphones on, mute the mic input channel and then switch on the monitors for listening back & mixing.
