Recording Guitar Amp... duh!? :P

OP:

I also own a Mesa DR along with the 5150. It is considerably more versatile than the 6505/5150 (6505 is the same amp as the 5150, same with the 6505+ and 5150II). The 6505 is pretty much a one trick pony (however it does that trick really well) with rather shit cleans, where as the mesa will actually pull off good clean, semi driven, and super over driven tones.

If you decide to go DR, remember to run it on Diode and not Rect (switch in the back) when you crank up the gain on the red ch.

" My cab has no insulation inside and the orange does apparently. The mesa does as well. "

Do they now?!

I have never seen a rock guitar cab with absorbent in it. I wonder what "they" think it is doing?

If attached to the inner surfaces it will damp panel resonance* a tiny bit but unless very thick, heavy and well stuck, not a lot.
If the idea is to kill standing waves a la hi fi cabs then on the walls it will do jack S! You would need a huge amount of filling to damp waves in a 4x12 and the effect would be to reduce the sensitivity by 4-5dB.....THAT would take a bit of selling next to a Marshall!

*Then there are those that say panel vibration is an important component of the sound of gitcabs? Plywood is best and MDF is poo!

Dave.

Made me think that something like 60% of what you hear from the amp is what speakers you go with.

Exactly! I just realized this myself over the past few years. I've been swapping and testing every speaker I can get my hands on. The speaker makes a gigantic difference on the overall sound. A Vintage 30 and G12T-75 are about ten million miles apart in sound even with everything else exactly the same.

Yeah...I've gone through a dozen speakers swaps in the last couple of years....and still have 4 leftover speakers that I really like, but just didn't get them to fit with a particular amp at this time, so I'm saving them for future use.

The most recent one I tried is a Scumback H55 which is an interpretation of the Pre-Roal Greenback, and has the 55Hz bass cone.....so if you like that extra thick low end, this one will do it for you. The upper end is very smooth, and none of that modern Greenback honk.

I also have some of the WGS made speakers, and they are quite good and I I like them over the Celestion models that they are meant to copy. I have a Reaper, Veteran and Retro from them.

I really like the WGS speakers I've heard. They seem to do a really nice job for a great price.

I was looking though Guitar Center used gear last night and they had plenty to choose form. I'll probably go with the triple or dual rec, but either way they had some decent deals in the used gear section fo sho. There is hope that I can score the good shit once I have the money of course :D

Now I just need to sell this damn Jet City amp... lol

Let me put my personal bias hat on for a minute.....

Marshall JVM410. Don't ignore it. Keep it in mind. I have one. It kills. It will do brutal gain all day long in addition to all the classic Marshall tones from yesteryear that most people know and love. It's clean channel is spectacular. And believe it or not, it does low volume pretty damn good for such a monster of an amp. You said you like the JCM 800? Well the majority of this amp is based off the 800. Head to head I'd say the JVM's OD2 channel is equal on par with anything heavy the Dual Rec can do, and the JVM's vintage/crunch, classic rock, cockrock, glam rock, and clean tones by far exceeds a Dual Rec. The Dual Rec might edge out the JVM in modern radio rock Nickelback sounds. Lol. It also seems to be happy with just about any quality speakers whereas Dual Recs really jive best with V30s in Mesa cabs. The one drawback to the JVM - cost. It's an expensive amp, even used. I lucked out and found mine for $1150, which is kind of a steal, but usually they hover in the $1300-1700 range used. It's an extremely versatile amp though.

Okay I'm taking my personal bias hat off now.

yeah but he really wants that hi-gain metal sound and I don't think the Marshall is the top dog in that area.

Yeah I'm not completely settled on anything just yet. I haven't even gotten to test any of them out. I guess when I do I'll make a list of the ones I really liked and just go for which ever I can get a decent deal on and with in my budget at the time :D

I don't always do metal projects. So, also have to take that into consideration...

Not usually, but the JVM goes into stupid gain territories. It's the highest gain Marshall ever made. The YJM might be right there with it. The OD2 channel on the JVM is insane. I don't even begin to touch that much gain on mine.

This is the Satriani model , but the regular JVM will do the same.

lol ..... alrite ....... that's pretty gainy!
:laughings:

Yeah, for real. It's crazy. I usually plod along in OD1 "green mode" with low gain. Crunch channel Orange and Red mode is really nice too and gets just beyond typical Marshall crunch, but it doesn't go anywhere near that metal shit. The OD channels in orange and red mode will blow your face off.

My default setting with the LP is OD1 Green, gain around 3. It's about as hot as a stock JCM 800.

I do like that Marshall sound man. I'm a big fan of old school metal and tons of albums have that sound. Part of the reason I have Marshall engrained into my brain is all massive stacks of marshals you would see at concerts. Not only live, but in movies, videos etc. I mean to be honest you might be surprised how much different music I actually listen to. I actually listen to for just relaxing having some beers or cleaning the house, driving down the road etc.

I'm really into older music. 30s Django Reinhardt type jazz. Just about all the old classic country from the 30s to 90s. 70's to 90's punk rock and it's sub-genres. CLASSIC ROCK out the ass! Hair metal, heavy metal, Death Metal, grind core, etc. 80's retro! Give me some old school gangster rap like NWA and I'm all set :D

I'm always discovering some new OLD music, but I don't really like much new music. Only new music coming out that I like is either by unknown artists or underground extreme metal bands. Some of these guys take it to a whole new level and it beats the fuck out of anything on the radio stations playing the latest hits. MY OPINION :thumbs up:

By insulation I mean some sort of 703/705 looking stuff attached to the rear panel. Not fluffy stuff smashed in and up against the speakers. It's fairly common in higher end closed backed cabinets though it seems.

What it does? No idea.

And I can't seem to get rid of this Jet City amp. Seems like no one is interested in buying one lol. The pawn shop offered me $200. We now know what amp company has no resale value :P

Check out this video I found on youtue :D

Your opinions? Would it be worth trying to keep the Jet City or does the Dual Dec sound really that much better? To me it has a little more depth, yet the Jet City is a little brighter, but I think you could work some EQ in right? The Jet City sounds pretty close to me. Maybe just a good pedal and a better cab would be the solution? OPINIONS?

personally I've found that I can get just about any sound out of just about any decent amp once pedals come into the equation.
Obviously you need a big cab to get some of those 'big bottom' metal sounds.
Also, I think that folks who spend inordinate amounts of time and sometimes money in search of that "just right" tone would be better served to put that time into their chops.
Not saying you in particular ..... just a general statement.

I play several times a day in 30 minutes sessions.
