Recording bass - DI and mic

My preferred method of bass recording is three tracks- DI, microphone on the amp, and a microphone on the bass itself. The DI gives a thick low-end. The amp gives punch and mid-range presence. And the microphone on the bass picks up the finger noise, scraping, pick noise. I mix that bass microphone in sparingly. I find it gives a good bit of presence in the high end.

I usually mix the three down to one track in my DAW for convenience and CPU performance's sake. But I back up the 3 tracks if (... when) I didn't mix them down correctly.

Oh thanks! I wasn't sure if you thought you knew me or anything. I was just confused
That was a decidedly nervous "why ?" :D.

Interestingly, I get alot of the finger noise and what I describe as the wood of the neck on the miked amp track.

You could be like Roy Thomas Baker and record 1 direct source, one amp source and one room source....
