the jerk at the board
My preferred method of bass recording is three tracks- DI, microphone on the amp, and a microphone on the bass itself. The DI gives a thick low-end. The amp gives punch and mid-range presence. And the microphone on the bass picks up the finger noise, scraping, pick noise. I mix that bass microphone in sparingly. I find it gives a good bit of presence in the high end.
I usually mix the three down to one track in my DAW for convenience and CPU performance's sake. But I back up the 3 tracks if (... when) I didn't mix them down correctly.
