Recommend a Really Nice Compressor for me...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Emperical Labs Distressor. It's probably my favorite compressor of all time (including 1176, LA2A, Fairchild 660, etc.) It's absolutely amazing. Throw in that ART Pro VLA and (I know you dont want to hear it) a RNC and you'd be doing pretty well. By the way, those API's sound really nice, too.

good call, but i think most people on here don't have experience with a distressor.

Would not be my first choice for classical. Maybe in yer face Steve Tyler screaming lyrics.

I have a couple Distressors and I love them, but I agree that they wouldn't be my first choice for classical. The vintage DBX stuff probably wouldn't either, and I have some of that as well. But it really depends on the music, as the Distressors can be very smooth and invisible if you use them lightly.

I did in passing...?? But I focused more on the Cranesong STC8 because of Mikey likes Piano/classical. Maybe after he cuts a few hard rock/metal albums he'll head into Distressor territory ;)

Nuke Em Dano :)

The Pro VLA is a truly underestimated unit. I find myself using it just about everytime I need to compress something while recording. Recommended. Other studio owners who visit my place is blown away by the sound. Seriously.

If you got confidence in your ears and aren't too snobbish about what the logo says, buy one.
