I am continually let down by the rants of BlueBear. He is the biggest example of the kind of gear/recording/music snobbery that makes me wonder why I love recording over something else full of pompous asses like oh, I don't know just rich ass holes who like to talk about themselves for hours.
Okay so there is a place called RedLobster...you can get red lobsters there...
PizzaHut, is a great place to grap a pizza. RadioShack...you could get the parts there to build a radio or add accessories.
At RedLobster, do you think they might say...there is no hope for you Mr. red lobster eater. Pizza Hut: Sir, you might as well give up, this pizza is going to probably suck. RadioShack: Do you go there and learn that RADIOS are inferior, electronics are over rated, you can't get results with your radio picking up music.
Shitty examples, whatever...the point is.. This is HOMERECORDING.com
Is there anyone else crazy enough as me to think that maybe bluebear should go and join....
How about that! I get pissed off everytime he posts. Why be such a dick to people? And DON'T SAY YOU AREN'T. You always Dumb down the hopes and dreams of home recordists. Why... are you insecure? What is the crime in wanting to achieve excellent results with great songs all done at home in a spare bedroom and hell, why not add...THROUGH ALL BEHRINGER GEAR!
Fuck you BlueBear. If you were stranded on an island and you needed to survive, just to have enough to eat, stay warm, have a place to sleep...just to keep oxygen in your lungs, would you say... It isn't possible to sleep on a homemade hammock! You better make sure you have a fucking Serta or you won't survive. YOU CAN'T EAT WILD GAME, you need something from a four star restaurant or you won't survive. STOP the snobbery. That feeling that you get in the music store when some asshole starts rattling off specs that mean nothing and probably aren't really accurate anyway. The way recordists hide their art like a secret only old uncool musicians can hold, when actually, they are pissed because they now have the money to buy the gear, but not the youth to enjoy it anymore. HOME+Recording= recordings made at home that may or may not compete with commercial stuff, but YES they are eligible for the fight.

Homey, I don't think it's so much that BB's answers are deliberately condescending. They're just (sometimes) depressingly obvious and brutally honest.

In other words, I think the questions pretty much set themselves up. Realistic questions will get more realistic answers. Using your Pizza Hut example ... what kind of response do you think you're going to get if you walk in (to a Pizza Slut) and say: "I would like a Filet Mignon, a side of cavier, and the finest wine on your menu, at least $80 / bottle."

What kind of response do you expect?

"Um ... this is Pizza Hut. We serve Pizza."

Well Homes, guess what? You are at homerecording.com . Don't get too crazy with the expectations. Just worry about getting the best recordings you can get with whatever you have. And don't let your p&$$y get too sore because someone says something you don't want to hear. It very well could be a challenge / motivation for you ... or at least an honest dose of reality.

Take notice

You didn't deny that BlueBear is a...um...DICK because he has a fancy studio. I've listened to his clips. I didn't want to quit my job to listen all day or anything like that. Plus, if I had that studio, I wouldn't be posting non-stop. I would be making music.

It sounds to me like you're jealous, dude. :D

Aw. How cute.

Oh Yes

Jealous of studio.... Of COURSE, what idiot wouldn't want that studio..
But why be such a gear snob? The best people in the world are the ones that have everything and don't seem to make it apparent in every conversation. I am just trying to stick up for the noobs who get discouraged by his ass hole approach to being a realist.
I want to sound like *fitty*, how many boxizzles of bed foam from WalMart will I need...can you recommend a microphone under $4.95 that will sound as good as Puffy....I don't even have real earphones that I mix on...just $3 earbuds...why aren't my results polished...

See, I understand what kind of questions are being asked. Somethings deserve ridiculous answers, but the spirit of home recording needs to stay alive, not be killed with people acting like gearsnobs. Nobody likes a gearsnob, NOBODY.

Hmmm...interesting

Interesting first post homerecorder1. You are certainly entitled to your opinion.

When I first started frequenting this forum, I had a similar opinion of some people on the board. I even lashed back one time when Cloneboy corrected me for misusing a term.

Allow me to share my ever changing perspective. Have you ever managed people? Specifically new hires? Have you ever taught a class?

Have you ever received the same question.....over and over and over and over? Sometimes you get the same question from the same person...over and over and over. It gets old dude. Sometimes you need to help people help themselves by saying things like: "We've gone over that before, what do you think?" If you don't do that, people don't learn...they will continue to use the crutch. You may not realize it at the time, but the person you believe is being rude, is actually helping you.

How many times have you seen someone ask a basic "newbie" question only to have Blue Bear reply with his Mixing 101 Primer? Many times, right? Did you ever think that he might be helping that person rather than ENABLE their dependence? Like lots of other resources on this forum, that primer is kick ass.

There is also something known as respect. Might some of the esteemed contributors on this board be a little arrogant at times? Maybe. I wouldn't disagree with that. Are their contributions invaluable to our learning process? Absolutely! Some of these guys (not all) have EARNED the right to be a bit arrogant....at times. Give them some respect and they will help you, directly or indirectly.

Have you checked out Blue Bear's web site (equipment, credentials) or listened to his work? How about chessrock? Massive Master? MasteringHouse? and lot's of other very knowledgeable and talented people I've not mentioned. These guys are for real. You are focusing on delivery, not content of message. I submit that you might be making a mistake in your initial assessment/post.

These contributors can help you stop chasing your tail and focus on what is important.....good room, good equipment, learn how to use the equipment....and probably most important...how to manage your own expectations given your environmental and resource constraints.

...and NO, It is a fact that you are not going to get a good lobster dinner @ Red Lobster nor a good steak at Sizzler. Nor will I get the same definition and character from my Studio Projects C-1 into my M-Audio Octane in my game room with my 4 kids farting and running around as a forum member who owns and operates a Pro Studio...Neumann>Neve>pick a recording medium tracked in an acoustically pristine space. We haven't even talked about skill or experience yet. Dude, it's just not a fair fight.

Anyway....I know I'll just lose more rep points for posting this....probably from some angry young buck who can't stand being told that experience and education actually count for something. Frankly, I don't give a sh*t.

Peace Out

Bart

I like gearsnobs.

Not all of them, mind you. Just the ones who buy me ice cream.

I'm guessing you must own some Behringer gear, and are feeling some guilt as a result. Come on now. It's okay. You can talk to Chessrock about it.

Mr. C-Rock

Now you are just antagonizing the young man.

Repeat after me....Honey, not vinegar....Honey, not vinegar.

Oh..I see

I am not standing for snobbery. I understand the relevance of the educator concept. I really do. I think many people get educated by you guys. Are you just outright rude. NOPE. And NO, none of my vital signal chain is passing through any...you know...the B word..stuff. LOL.

Make no mistake.

Make no mistake. I'm not educating anyone about recording. I'm a newb myself, just an older newb who is willing to admit that their are people much smarter than me on many subjects.

I'm not too proud to take advice or accept help from anyone.

Now I have to admit, that BB (and myself, and several others I can think of) come up with a "short fuse" on occasion.

But really, think of some of the questions...

"I've been recording in my closet for 3 weeks now. I have a $60 mixer, a $40 microphone and the Waves Diamond Bundle that a friend got me for Groundhog Day. Why don't my mixes stand up to 600 thousand dollar productions recorded in a 38 million dollar recording facility with a team of expert engineers and an entire crew just to tech the instruments?"

It's very true (as BB used to have as part of his signature) that "the ear" is at least as important as "the gear."

But there has to be a point of realism also - It's "the ear" PLUS "the gear" that makes it all come together.

very valid points gentleman...

..but Blue Bear can be a big Donkey Dick to some newbies...

its because hes Canadian....;)

I believe that Mr homerecorder raise an honest observation, which I must conquer with...

if your gonna downtalk/discourage someone, why bother posting? Care should be taken when dealing with those who are less knowledgeable of mixing.

Information should be generously shared, OR at the VERY least, one should refrain from counterproductive negative tones...

BUT WAIT!! THERES MORE!!!

who really is homerecorder1? obviously an alias....hmmm..

(count it!)

...blah blah snipped...
Can I interest you in some anger management? Sounds like you could use it..............

I don't think I've seen BB try to discourage anyone from doing anything. Mind you, if you are trying to get a particular result with out the equipment needed to achieve that result, he will tell you that you can't do it. That isn't snobbery or a put down. It is just honest.
That would be like me asking how to move a refrigerator across town in my Volkswagen Bug. The answer would be "you can't, You need a pickup truck." Not because he is a truck snob or trying to discourage me from moving refrigerators. It is just because I don't have the equipment to get the job done.

The bottom line is, you cannot get the same result as 'the pros' with a computer and $175 worth of mics and mic preamps plugged into your soundblaster. No one is telling anybody to give up anything except the idea that without at least mid level gear, you can't compete with 'the pros'.

Jason - you're such a pickup snob... :D

By the way - can you help me with some drywall next week?

No. Get a truck...loser

I totally agree with you Homerecorder1!!!!!! Right on man!!!
I can't stand Blue Bear....I can't stand how he actually knows what he's talking about. I can't stand how he corrects me when I say something that's wrong....why can't he just let me tell people incorrect facts!!!! And I hate you being honest! I can't stand honest people.
Why does he have such a nice studio!! I hate it that his clients actually think he's good enough to pay him money so he can buy that nice gear (although, I have differing opinions than he does about that Sony console he got recently......so...damn him for liking that console and having a different opinion than I do)
Damn you BlueBear for replying to any threads that I have started seeking a question to be answered...and damn you for your correct replies.
DAMN YOU BLUE BEAR.....DAMN YOU AND YOUR SMUG LITTLE BEAR ICON.

First of all I agree. He's using an alias. And Blue Bear is honest, like everyone should be. I remember when I first joined the forum back in 2001 everyone jumped me because I admitted i had burned copy of cool edit. I didn't know any better back then, but after that I started purchasing all of my programs. sometimes being mean as hell and being honest works.
