It all depends

It all depends on the type of shit and type of honey.

Flies seem to really like horse and dog shit. For some reason they don't like cat shit very much. Maybe cat shit is impacted by all the hairballs in the feline digestive tract....I dunno.

Any shit experts?

In other words, I think the questions pretty much set themselves up. Realistic questions will get more realistic answers. Using your Pizza Hut example ... what kind of response do you think you're going to get if you walk in (to a Pizza Slut) and say: "I would like a Filet Mignon, a side of cavier, and the finest wine on your menu, at least $80 / bottle."

What kind of response do you expect?

"Um ... this is Pizza Hut. We serve Pizza."

Love the analogy 'rock. But I would add, Can I have that order for $10?

I REALLY think that there should be a better FAQ on this BBS as Bruce, John, myself, and others have answered the same questions many, many, many (did I say many) times. And after a while it gets to be a bit irritating when folks don't do their homework and expect an answer to something that has been posted again and again.

If I see another post on "my mixes don't sound as loud as commercial CDs" I'm gonna freak ...

Homey...

Stick around these boards for a year or so and you will begin to realize why BB, chessrock, fairview, MM, and all the other vets are the way they are. I am the farthest thing from a pro and some times I want to tell people to get a F'in brain. If you take the time to weed through the rants you will find a lot of usful information being handed out by these guys.

.......or that insanely annoying, "Best pre for $200" thread that pops up here at least 4x a month!

What's all this noise about, anyway? If you think Bruce is occasionally rude, hang out at one of the pro studio forums for a while. Bruce is a Blue Teddy Bear in comparison.

Where else can you tap into the level of expertise that's available here? Or do you prefer "feeling good about yourself" to actually being shown the error of your ways, correcting them, and making progress?

Nobody ever learned from being told everything they did was great. Sooner or later reality'll smack you in the face...and better here, on the internet, than in your studio with a client saying, "Why can't you make it sound the way I want it?"

And one last thing: it costs money, and time, and effort to record. It's not something a box will do for you, despite all the ad copy to the contrary. Wake up and smell those electrons racing through the air!

That's a great way of putting it.

try to keep in mind that this is a community, so there will be all types of personalities contributing. if you think bruce is a gear snob, just keep that in mind when reading his posts. brush them off if you so choose, or maybe better, contribute encouragement when you feel he's being too harsh with someone.
i agree that beginners really need support in this field since it's not cheap, and since there are so many variables ranging from people's rooms, budgets and gear, ears, taste, and passion. for the most part, getting and giving answers is never as easy as saying "buy this compressor", "stay away from behringer," or "what's the best budget preamp?". hell, truths of one style of music may not apply to others at all. if i recall correctly, the guy who mixed outkast's "hey ya" loves cheap alesis gear, and i swear to god i read about some professional who loved the 3630 for particular jobs. i imagine that behringer composers must be used in plenty of pro racks. use what works until you know it's not working for you. i don't think bruce would argue against that... except the 3630 part.

i hope that you don't let peoples' attitudes affect you too much to listen to what they have to say. at the same time, not everything that someone will say will apply to you. you'll have to pick and choose what is the right advice for you, and that's not too difficult if you understand where the advice is coming from.

good luck with your music,
marcus

p.s: a note to newbs, use the search function :)

I concur on the better FAQ thingie. I've been a member here not much more than a month and here's my opinion. The mic sticky (especially the big thread) was amazing. I've always had a good ear, but where to start...that thread had me nailing mic placements really quick.

What I'd love to see is a FAQ about pre's and converters and reccomendations according to price catagory. Like before I even started down this home studio disaster I didn't even know what the hell you needed a pre for...I thought the point was only if you needed more than the 4 in PT. Next thing is convertors. I asked a friend about channel strips and then he starts asking me about what convertors I am using??? (I had no clue what they were and didn't want to look like dumbass...the guy has couple of Grammy's in his house for this stuff) - anyhow you get my point.

You have to understand that unless your very very experienced in this thing, it is difficult to trust your own ears. But if you have the money, you don't want to buy something that your going to want to replace as your ear gets more educated. So you come to boards like this to get opinions from those who know.

I know this from guitar...I'm a guitar player. I got custom shop this, vintage that, handwired this blah blah blah. I can hear the difference easily between the different price tags. But unless your a guitar player with experience, nobody gives a shit.

IMO there is:
Bad Sound - where the sound detracts from the song to the layman's ears.
Good Sound - people generally enjoying the song and the sound isn't hindering that process
Great Sound - Most people can't notice the difference, or rather, don't bother to notice the difference.

I think most people on this board fall into wanting to attain the good sound catagory and refer to that as "Pro Sound" even if it isn't.

Enough out of me. Oh BTW all you pro dudes giving your opinion, for what it's worth, you have me convinced let one of your companies master by musical disasters. I personally think it's probably great promo that you come to these boards.

Hey 'rock am I gonna hafta choke a bitch!? :)

It's a simple fact, that, the more you record, and critically listen, the more demanding you become. The only way to stop this process is to bail out.
