quick pinch roller question(s)

Hey if I get a new roller from Tascam does it come with a new bearing, or is it just the rubber?

And if at some point in the future I need to have one rebuilt by Terry does he actually rebuild from the old rubber or does he just form a new rubber piece around the bearing?

I'm finally doing some cleaning and deeper inspecting of my 48 and was wondering if I can just strip the old nasty rubber off and throw away, then put the bearing away somewhere as a backup, or if I will need the rubber on it for a rebuild(it's pretty nasty and messy). And I was just curious if the factory replacement ships with a new bearing.

Not sure about the bearing, but Terry does rebuild your old roller. From what I understand he does a very good job.
 
When I ordered my pinch roller for my TSR-8, it was the whole thing. Have no fear.

I second what Dodge said; Terry does a bang up job on pinch rollers. I think his might actually outlast the NOS factory stuff. He did a pinch roller for an Akai deck I have and was very pleased with it.
 
Awesome thanks guys... I was just concerned that if I took the rubber off it might not be rebuildable, and then I was just curious if the factory replacement was the whole assembly or just the rubber. Terry's site says he strips all the old rubber off when you send it to him, so I think I should be good to do it. I don't know why but just the thought of having that sticky stuff anywhere it could potentially spread was really bugging me:).

I know what you mean man. The rollers from ALL of my RT-909 decks went gooey and made one hell of a mess.:mad::eek: I finally got them off...as well as I could without making a bigger mess. They are sitting in a couple of plastic canisters waiting to go to Terry. I ordered a pair from Pioneer and put those on, so I have at least one of those decks up and running.

I'll have to see if I can dig up pictures from one of them. Black goo all over the transport and face of the deck. Had to tear it down and soak/scrub the damned thing!
 
yeah it's a mess, my capstan looked like it was made of rubber after I tested the transport functions when I brought the 48 home. I just cleaned all that up, and judging by the mirror I would say that all I did was transfer it to various places all over my clothes and body:D

Depends on the model.

For instance the new pinch roller I got for my 58 was just the puck...the rubber on the aluminum donut...no bearings. The 48 roller comes with a new bushing.
