i do love smilies...
hey.

over the weekend im planning on looking around some music shops, and possibly might walk out the other side with a new guitar. problem is, ive never bought a guitar myself :o ive played an old one belonging to my elder brother for around three years, but i want something thats mine now (and half decent, cos 'legend' arent the best guitar manufacturers ever... :D )

but i know that playing an instrument for half an hour in a shop doesnt let you know everything about it, and i was just wondering if theres any good stuff to find out that isnt obvious from playing the guitar for a little while from the people in the shop...

also, what can i do with the guitar in the shop before i buy it to check its not gonna fall to pieces on me after five minutes (slight exaggeration... i hope... ). i was thinking about tuning and things as much as anything.

any suggestions?

thanks alot,

Andy

I've got a Seagull S6 which I've had for about 4 years. I think I only paid about $300 Canadian for it (so what's that...about $27.99 US? ;)). That was new and included a hardshell case. Solid cedar top (they make spruce models too) and sounds and plays fantastic. And very well made to boot. Although the cedar is a little soft and does scratch easily. But I ain't big on looks anyway!

No, its not a Martin, Taylor or L'Arrivee but they're 10 times the price of the Seagull, but they're not 10 times the guitar IMHO.

Electric or acoustic? Bit more info and I'm sure you'll get a lot of recommendations - what style of music do you play - what do you want to use it for - that sort of thing!

Try to find a music store where the staff are knowledgable but don't describe everything as "awesome".

Just play as many as you can. At some stage, one will "speak to you" and you'll look at the price tag, take a deep breath, and get out a credit card!
