I'm looking into purchasing new drum mics. Right now im running a 18/14 m-audio firewire with pro tools and was looking into purchasing MXL 993 condenser pair for my overheads. I got to work with these a while back and was very happy with the brightness of cymbals and was wondering if anyone has had any problems with these or may recomend another pair of overheads for around $200.

Also was looking into the MXL 990/991 mics for maybe micing my snare and kick but was wondering if anyone would know how the 990 would sounds on a kick, kind of not sure how that would sound. This is my first investment into some decent mics so any suggestion would be awesome. My price range is around $300 in all.

Thanks

For kick, I'd be looking at something other than the MXL990/991. There are mics made by Shure, AKG, Audix and many others in your price range that I'd consider before the lower priced MXL990/991.

Is there any reason you're limiting yourself to MXL mics? I mean, they're ok, and their pencil condensers make decent overheads, but I wouldn't choose them for kick or snare. For OH, I'd suggest the MXL 604, which come with both omni and cardioid caps, and have a much flatter frequency response than the 993. You may like the "brightness" of the 993 on your cymbals, but you'll eventually tire of that sound, I suspect.

For kick and snare, most would go with dynamic mics, unless you're doing lots of jazz brushwork or something. The venerable Shure SM57 is a good snare mic and would also work on kick, in a pinch. Start saving for a good kick mic, though.

are the cad ctm-1000a dual capsule condensers any good?

As far as I can tell, the only differences in the MXL 990 and 991 are the bodies. Granted, the larger grill on the 990 will give a slight change in EQ, but the capsules and electronics are the same.

ya ive decided to order those cad condensers and save up for a nice kick mic.

Almost... but not quite ;) . The main difference (apart from grill), the brass ring jobby on the capsule considerably changes its response and pattern, as a function of a longer pressure gradient path and physical capsule size (it becomes about 1" large).

Oh. Same in the MCA SP1 and SP2.
