Alright, here's a few questions for those who know what they are talking about.
I'm starting out new to this business of "producing beats" & Attempting to do some lyricism, as well.. But, The thing I am stuck on, is making a "melody" to my beats, I can make the bassline perfect as all heck, & Then the melody is what makes the song sound like crap, So if anyone has any ideas or helpful tips on how to make the BASSline better, & the Melody collab with it...If I don' reply to the posts as quick as you would like, e-mail me, unexpected_expectations@hotmail.com, I'll check that more often I'm sure, I use Fruity Loops Producer Edition. & I have about 100 Beats that all sound like they came out of some techno gods @$$ :p But help me as much as you can, it's much appreciated. Thanks in advance

eyy

Well if everybody knew how to make killer melodies, nobody would try to be a recording engineer!

You may want to go to the songwritting forum on this bbs, post a link to your beat / bassline mp3 and see if anybody can give you some creative inspiration. It's ok to have a collaboration with your first work, just for starters.

Of course if you want to keep it secret, and to yourself, then ... i duno.

Do you understand some rudimentary music theory?

Like what notes to play in a certain mode / key. Say your bass line is in oh .. "A Major" , do you know what chords to play on there?

.. or are you just suffering a creative block?

What type of music is this? DjIce as in "Dj" , is this like hip hop ?

Fruity Loops Studio (FL Studio) has some example songs there to get you started. (I'm not trying to be patronizing, just trying to help dude.)

Also , can you emulate your favorite artists? Try to reproduce someone's beat and melody just for the fun of it , as an expirement. Sometimes, you can derive something from somebody's work and still be completely original. Give credit where credit is due though.

I love the fact that you are showing interest and checking the path of others that walked it before you.

Melody: Ya you might be in the wrong forum. Maybe get a cheap/used keyboard and veg out with it. You may stubble upon something, figure out something that was in your mind or even fall in love with the keyboard!

Good luck in all that you do!

Thanks all for the replies, Yes I do have a few beats of my own, It is most for HipHop & other types...if you want to listen to one, http://www.local-geek.info Has one there, if it doesn't autoplay...contact me & I'll give you another link to download it, But I have a keyboard I was messing with it today with my Guitar amp, came up with some melody but it sure isn't hip hop melody thats all I can say, also I'm trying to figure out how to create a actual song on the keyboard, then I can just record it over my mic. until further notice of purchasing a transfercable...MIDI out...to my sound card.

But, If anyone has any recommendations of how to get started & learn more about Fruity aside from the tutorials given in Fruity, Let me know, because the ones given there, helped, but not enough.
The song that is on the site is suppose to be a "REmix" type of Eminem - Without Me, it sucks bad..I will admit, But I need all the critisism & help I can get, So if you can help me, Thanks in advance.

Few of my favorite artists are of course 2Pac, & 50 Cent, Eminem, Most of the new Rappers, except Ja-Rule *rolls eyes*, & a few others I dispise (Personal Oppinion)...
But anyways on to the topic, if you can help, post here, or e-mail me, unexpected_expectations@hotmail.com Thanks in advance

taking some theory lessons would do any musician good! I would suggest picking up a workbook at your local music shop and working through it. Take a look at a some of mozart or bach's music once you've learned some theory and you'll learn a little about melody too..."there is nothing new under the sun"...a lot of the melodies you hear today can be found in 'classical' music already.

Also, you might want to think about learning to use a synth keyboard, or use a synth program and a midi keyboard. You'll be able to create all kinds of sounds and layer them to create your melodies...it's how must hip hop is done as far as I know: Lay some beats, add a bass line, and then add some synth work to make some melody...then you add your rhymes and other vocals.

hope that helps,

Jacob

just noticed you mentioned a 'transfercable - midi out to my sound card"

What kind of soundcard are you using?

Also, if you're using fruityloops, you might want to think about graduating to another program like Reason. Fruityloops in my opion is good for one thing - making beats. But I'm betting that because you're wanting to do all this melody and bass stuff you might want to look into a program that does all of that.

You can pick up a free copy of Reason 3.0's demo and learn about it in the least...it can do a lot! But once you want to get more serious you'll want the full version. Just a suggestion...

When I'm having trouble with a melody I put down my guitar (or bass, or whatever I'm trying to play it with), turn the basic tracks up loud, get down with my bad self...

And hum. Or "la la eyowla la!" or whatever it takes to get a melody going that grooves with the music I've already laid down. Its sometimes much easier to get creative with a melody using your easy-to-play voice.

Of course, then you have to actually PLAY it on your instrument... but that's a good way to learn. :)

Take care,
Chris

That sounds silly but it is excellent advice. That is how I come up with a good 50% of my guitar lines. :D
Of course as a beginner you may have some trouble transfering that to an instrument, but you'll learn.

Sounds like a plan ...& I could try that as well, seeing as I have a Keyboard & an Electric Guitar I could work something out I'm sure :) Thanks for the advice
