I want to lay down some 70's funk tracks & jazz with my sonar software.what other equipment would i need to get the most out of my tracks?I have the bass & the soundcard with breakout box.would i still need a J-station?

keep funk alive

Those genres of music tended to be based on Fender Precisions recorded "direct," meaning they were plugged directly into the mixer.

If that's your thing, you shouldn't need any outboard devices, I don't think, and there are any number of inexpensive (or free/warez) plugins that one can use to treat the tracks in the mix afterwards in any case.

Actually, I think recording "direct" meant they were recorded through a direct box and then into a mixer. Or recording two seperate tracks, with one through a DI and the other being a mic'ed bass amp.

No doubt this was eventually done, but originally it meant that the instrument was plugged directly into the Hi-Z input of the mixer. I've seen it done many times that way in the old days, too, right square into the board. Hot way was to have the volume turned way down on your Precision and whack the strings hard.

There's a great story about Ike Turner, who was considered a great producer at the time, throwing a fit during one session. The engineers and the bassist were putzing around miking a bass cab and wasting a lot of time. Turner furiously grabbed the bass and cable, plugged the other end directly into the board and screamed, "THAT'S how you record a ******* bass!":D

Oh Yeah!!!!!!! saves the temper too.

Bongo, You got the story wrong about Ike. First he walked over and bitch slapped Tina then he took off his shoe and beat the bass player with it. Finally he picked up the cord and plugged it into the mixer and said "If you dont start playing I'm gonna kill every one you mutha fuckas".

They were all too afraid to tell him it sounded like shit ;)
