Just bumping this back up to the top
Since it seems to have gotten lost in the mix.

Not much time left.

Giles117,

This is both my first and final mix.

Either link should work. I think one link streams the song and the other downloads it but I am not sure.

I am a newbie at mixing and don’t even own any mastering software yet. I hope you guys are judging only on mix quality because it is in need of mastering.

Let me know what you think folks. Tear it up like all the others. Thanks!

Nice, if it wasn't for a couple glaring balance issues, this would be my favourite mix. Mix is too ruled by the bottom end and the vocals aren't cutting through a lot. Drum might be panned too wide.

Here's my attempt. It's not my final mix yet.. maybe it is. I want a few comments first.

You are only assuming that the band wanted their vocals out front. I was assuming that they wanted them more background. How will we know who assumed correctly? The band wasn't here to tell me.

I also had to assume that, since they are into metal, they like lots of bottom end. The bottom here at my studio sounds smooth, rich, and full -- yet tight, cleanly defined and delightfully dynamic. I think the band would have enjoyed it. I surely hope the judges have better monitors than I.

Come to think of it...isn't this a little like a chilly cook-off? Whom ever makes it just the way the judge likes it, wins! ...or is there a strict outline of characteristics they are looking for?

I'm not trying to be a smart-ass here. I am just giving everyone food for thought and/or conversation.

PS.
Thanks for your comments, Doug H. (Don’t tell anyone but, I was apprehensive too about the vocals and some of my panning choices.)

But there it is. My choices stand.

The answer is YES. Even though there are guidelines the judges opinion is still just that "an opinion". It's sort of like asking "How do you like your Steak". I like mine very well done but someone else might call it over cooked.
How much is too much Bass? Only you have that answer. Try not to look at it so much as a contest but more of a learning exercise.

Hence the opinions of 3 separate judges that can be averaged to get a final result :)

Not really. I don't think the vocals sit very well regardless of the vision and the bottom end is just too big and squishy IMO. The keys and vocals are bunched up down the pipe which gives the mix a bit of an odd sound stage, especailly given the fat ass.

I more appreciated the various elements as apposed to how they were blended together.

between me and you, I wish I let a bit more bass out on my mix :)

btw, After listenning to your mix I went straight to mine and spread the overheads out lol. I'm not resubmitting tho, I've done enough with this one.

Well, thanks again. I am just a rookie and still have a long way to go. I still need to dress up the room with baffles and get a decent RTA for tuning the system. Perhaps that would have helped. If you only found two or three things wrong with my mix, (which could be easily tweaked,) then I must be on the right track.

I am not really open for business yet and these are the first “real” tracking files I’ve ever had my hands on. (Well okay, I did get some from another guy once but they had severe clipping the whole way through each and every track. Needless to say, they were quite a struggle.)

I think I have a good ear for it. I just need some hands-on practice.

Perhaps they should have a “Rookie only” mix contest. It looks like I am competing against guys who have been doing this for years.

Oh well, thanks everyone.

What does Bump mean? That you are bumping the thread back up to the top of the list?

Oh well it looks like I don't really have time to try a new mix with the new monitors so I guess the entry I submitted earlier will be my final mix.

Here it is..

I'm in the process of uploading my entry now... I hope it's not too late...
