Gates are a good thing.
Only time i use them seems to be on vocals.
Drums once in a while too though.
But not so much.

speaking of gates...
i was going to mention/ask this earlier but didn't want to "bash" the guy who gives us free songs to mix...but are you using gates on these competitions? i notice at the end of the song while the overheads (or a few other instruments) ring out that they seem to cut off really quickly before the sound reall ends. kinda forced to add a fade out so you don't hear tracks disappearing at different times at the end. anyway, just some thoughts :)

I tend not to do anything to extravagent in the recording process when me and the artist are just formulating the tune, which is the recording yall are mixing.
This recording is a reference for the work we did to make the song in the first place.
So i would never take offense at all if you critiqed it. Its not bashing. I admit its crap.:)
As for your question, none of the tracks are gated/effected in anyway.
Once the drums/any instrumentation were done i just pushed stop.
Wich left the overheads, and maybe a few others cut off. Now normally i could care less, since these takes would only serve as a production reference for the true recording.
But..since i entered it to the contest i just figured i would do a cheesy little fade on the end. So thats what youre hearing Benny. Not a gate.
Furthermore, i would NEVER gate the overheads.

Have a nice day.

I thought the vocal track was gated, not that I really cared one way or another.

....ok...here's my effort: Starlit Sky Mix Contest

...this is a lot of fun and I appreciate the opportunity to be doing this :)
I've listened to the various mixes as they've been submitted and was amazed to find that most of the tracks were panned very much the same way by most people....I hope to return and offer more critique when I'm more awake ;)

Right on man!
Listen and learn...

Listening to all these mixes...
Ive actually got a few ideas about how i might want to aproach the true tracks from section to section.

very useful.
like passive input.

there a lot more entries this time around!
did Blue Bear ever get his mixed last time? I'd be interested in hearing it.

yeah, real men don't use gates. real men use DISTORTION. lots and lots of distortion, to cover up the noise that the lack of gates creates.

Not yet.... it's still on my list, though!

OTOH, I can't complain about having lots of booked time slots!
;)

Kids use distortion. REAL men use tube drive!

People that don't know how to to create power and feeling with their playing style use distortion, people that do use tube drive to make it just that bit more raw.

Either way, I've never used a gate to my satisfaction in my entire life. My moto is:
If it needs gating, you didn't do a good job trackin' it.

Hi,
I know that the dead line for dowload has expired,but... is it still possible to download the files ? I will be interested to mix.
