I'm still in - just haven't had a chance to get it up on the board yet... but go ahead and vote on submissions anyways......

Yeah. LOL Me loves the bottom. I was a FOH Engineer for12 years before i jumped into the studio and I still do live shows so I have to "CONTROL my flesh" but hey that is why we have those extra set of ears... called the client. :)

Glad you enjoyed it. My wife tries to keep me straight, but she loves the bottom too. LOL

Hey Blue get yours up. BTW Your guy is gonna help me with my site. I like this guy really knows the ins and outs. Not just a web designer. :)

sorry about that everyone i got a wicked Ssss problem when i sing and my proxcimity was probably a little too close!

Ahh well,, live n learn right! ;)

A Technique i use when recording a singer is to....Drum Roll....

Change mics. I have dark mics and bright mics depending upon the vocalist. Helps out with the s thing.

But over all, the royer is too bright and edgy on your vocal. It is not an Ssssss thing. Just an overall character thing.

I almost thought you used a Rode Mic on the vocal it was so bright. (Of course I like the Rode mics on specific things, but over all I have found them to be unnaturally bright. If you look at the plots, they tend to boost everything above 10k.)

From listening to your vox, I think the baby Bottle might be a little more mellow on your vocal. It's a little darker than a U87. I am not keen on the royers sound on stuff (dont have one. :) ) But I Might go get one now. :)

ok giles youre gonna have ta forgive me but,,
i spaced and gave you some wrong info!
:o sorry.
I used as focusrite voicemaster pro on the vox. i was thinkin i did the vox dry but it was the guitar i did dry! I forgot...I tracked the whole thing in a little under an hour, so that detail ghot a little lost.
Truth fully the royer does NOT sound that bright.
I just screwed up and put too much "vintage harmaonics" on it.
The royer sounds frikin amazin on practically everything! :)
anyways, my bad.
peace.

Sorry benny ive been busy as hell the last couple a days man, but ive been meaning to review yours and rudalicious' posts.

I listened to your mix, and immediatly got the impression that there was some pumping going on in the guitars compression. And i agree with nik about the cymbals being a tad too loud.
On the bright side :) ..
I really dug how you boosted the toms and the change when the tom roll came in!
And your mix had a nice fullness to it as well.
About the chord yeah youre right! It should be Minor and i stroked that one string and it sorta geeked it huh?
But i drilled it in one take so i just let it be quirky.

Good job over all!
See ya at the pt forum!

Thanks for listening! It's funny how the parts I like other people don't. hahaha, like the cymbals I liked how they clashed loud....i thought it kind of built the song up. i'll take another listen and see if I can hear the compressor on the guitars. i think my ears still need more listening time to hear things like that. I kept trying to get the toms to ring out more...i felt they needed more of a strong hollow sound. especially since the are hardly featured in this tune.
Anyway, thanks for doing this for us xfinsterx. I had fun and I'm sure everyone else did. Good playing too...i actually enjoyed the song. :) And thanks for joining our PT forum!!!

PS. I think we need to put all the links to the songs in another thread along with the poll. This way other guests here can find it easily and we can listen to all of them back to back without having to search for all the links. just an idea

I'd love to hear that royer raw. :)

I created a new directory on my server. I also adjusted the kick back a few db. I posted it as 2 versions, one with some crude mastering and one unmastered. The original 1st mix is still there. :)

hope all can get to this link. I posted everyone elses mp3's as well :)

thank giles! i actually really liked your Con-test2 one. if i could revote i'd give it to yours. :)

hmm?

im confused..
this thread has like 1000 hits and 100 replies.
But as it stands atthis moment ive got 7 seven votes totall.
If we dont get a bunch more votes by the end of today ill be deciding a winner!
This is the part of the competiton i was unsure about was the voting..
Live n learn. ;)

Damn sorry guys, didnt read thru the 5 pages before posting my mix, I saw the voting poll and went into a panic and did the quick mix to submit. Then I see the other thread for the winner. lol NICE JOB GILES. Did you replace the kick and snare? Sound great

Anyways Congrat to everyone sorry I didnt pay attention to the thread disregard my entry.

Thanks again for doing this in the first place. Enjoyed it :)

hey pro tools user!
Nice mix!
Really well balanced throughout the song, and the dynamics of the creciendos were totally intact. :D
Youre mix was a little like mine though in the fact that in was a little dark sounding.
Like it might have needed a little brightness to it.
other than that, im sorry you didnt get to the polls in time.
But i think giles had us all(except maybe blue bear)beat!
peace.

Hey thanks Fin,

I appreciate the chance to work on some different stuff and post. I thank you for taking the time to put this all together. ;) Maybe next time I can stay more on top of whats going on. Again thanks for checking my mix out and yeah it is a little on the dark side (boring) if thats appropriate. lol I wish I didnt rush to get it posted, just been busy with school and work. Next time theres a mix contest and you're not running it, we can both get in and really kick some azz. lol Again great job putting this together and I have to say I'm enjoying the people and talent on this site. Not too many ego freaks here that I can see, just down to earth people who love working with music. Just wish I learned to play an instrument but recording is what I love to do at the moment and hopefully I can learn from the talented folks here like yourself.

Yeah Giles did a fantastic job, I liked Cracked lids version also both very good!!

Peace bro

Thanks fin for the compliment. As I said I am a Jazz Gospel R&B Hip Hop Mixer primarily. My Wife does all kinds of music and mixing her album was a learning experience, We went from jazz to Country Pop. So I was allowed the chance to push the limits. The 3 songs I mixed that charted well were contemporary gospel (R&B). Never along this line. Folk pop is what I would call this, though I am not sure if that is an accurate classification.

After I did the 2 hour mix on your track, I listened to some edgier stuff (Breaking Benjamin) and realized the kind of color you guys like in your mixes. I do appreciate all styles of music and this was a fun thing to do. Helped boost my confidence as I pursue other musically diverse clientelle for my studio. :)

BTW one last comment. Man I wish those toms had been tracked better, I would have rocked them tight. :) Drums can be a challenge. I own a Remote recording truck so I get a lot of chances to cut toms and am always glad to help guys with the tracking and mixing of them.

I will be posting my wifes latin song up for crituqe (it is one we are not pushing to radio. So I can Do that. ;) ) All Live except the record scratch loop. Will let you know when it is up :)

The drums are nice for the style and I kept them pretty raw.

Peace.

So I see this contest today the 11th, and figure I've got a little over a week to play around with it while I'm mixing a full length CD project that has to be done on the 27th, but as I go though the thread I see the deadline get shorter and shorter till all the sudden it's over, wow in the matter of 20 minutes, for me it went from over a week to "we have a winner":(
Oh well Nice mixes everyone.

Why not mix it anyway and post your vibe. I thiought more of this as practice versus a contest.

I am a bit pissed off that I only got one vote, even then itwas me who cast it. Giles I thought yours was mediocre....way too fuzzy. Benny you must have worked out a way to vote twice
all crap
