Also I think there's plenty of room for creativity not only in the mixing of the distorted rhythm, but especially in the interplay of the backing vocal and the lead. That's a critical area that I'll be focusing on in judging.

That's just what I was going for ;) Everybody seems to dislike the backing vox, but even though they are somewhat out of tune, I find them quite workable and definately worth something to the mix.

Nope, Ocnor, I don't listen to every mix that's posted up here...
I've not time, as I have dial-up,
I would be spending hours downloading them all.
Let alone listening time.

I listen to a couple here and there though.

I must say I'm waiting forward to hear your mix :)

Hopefully it is something different :D

I really haven't had any inspiration with the backvox.. They are indeed out of tune and have been sang with a bit too much "complexity" in it for a back vox. So it may be quite possible to make something nice out of these. So as I said, I'm really looking forward to hear your mix :)

Volunteer to manage that for PMC #12 and I bet xfinsterx would be happy ;)

Seriously, gimme a list of objective criteria and I'll publish results, but I won't judge that way. It's too easy to mix by the numbers and still sound like poo.
That's exactly the point I was making. The judging is done by personal preference because true objective criteria doesn't exist. :)

HAPPY B-DAY Finster!

Getting a bit tired of this . . .

If I recall correctly, your mix was -11dB RMS. That's about 3 dB too loud, especially for a premaster.

Read this:

How's that for objective?

If my memory is faulty, and that was somebody else's mix, the point is the same: objective criteria are being used in judging.

Hmm...
That's, IMO, a little too nit-picky,
And I sincerely hope that isn't a judging criteria...

here's mine

here's mine.

i really had fun with this, thanks. :)

(back to listening to other entries)

ah crap, i just realized it's like 10 megs.
if thats too big a problem for anyone just let me know and i'll put up a smaller one!!!!

Hey Giraffe. I think you have taken the most artistic approach of all the mixes I've listened to so far...
And I have to say that makes yours my favorite. Good job.

This is the last post I'll make on this thread on my theory of judging--please post on this thread if you want to continue the discussion:

http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=156225

Reading that takes a lot of the fun out of this...
It's likely I'll experiment on my own with these tracks,
And may or may not enter the contest...

Thanks for the reference though ms.

Somehow I get the feeling you are an aspiring actuary... :) :D

yea, i'm starting to realize i'm fairly alone on some of my ideas, make sure you listen to mine through to the end, some of the most fun stuff i did.

We seem to be talking about 2 different things. I was in no way referring to your critique of my mix or anyone else's mix. My curiosity was with the way the contest is judged not with you personally. I thought you of all people would be interested in what the difference in the results might be with different judging methods.
I doubt that I will even submit an official entry now as I seemed to have inadvertently pissed you off.

No, it takes a lot more to piss me off than that. I am concerned that this thread is getting very long with this discussion and there's still three weeks to go, so please, let's pick it up on the other thread.

Whoa,Whoa,Whoa!!

Dude Ocnor, Please by all means submit your entry!
:)

I think we are getting off base here.

More than judging, winning prizes, or even mixing, i wanted these contests to be a place where we can all hang out and have fun with each other, while learning! :)

I understand your points with the judging Ocnor, and they are valid, good points!

How's about you and i talk about co-ordinating a different style of panel for PMC12? Im always open to ideas ok? ;)

But bro...dont pull your entry ok?

Thanks. :D
