promotions idea

How about this:

We create a magazine for ourselves. Each artist gets 2 pages, 1 for "promo" and 1 for "get 2 know me" purposes

Each artist can design his own page within agreed upon guidelines. We can drop the pages in 1 agreed upon document (ms word, for instance) and we can print it out on our own dime, or come together to share in the price of a printer

then we can all divie up the copies and put them out at our shows, stores, etc.

then we all have a decent "magazine" that we can use to further our promotions

the promo section: pic or artist and text about project, services, etc.
get2knowme sectino: response to soem hip hop question/current event

any interested? holla

if we have signup list and make it a subscription that way we can get advertisers...

The key to advertisement money is proven readers we could post it on blogs too but my point is we can make money just with ads and give the mag away still...

Most newspapers dont need to sell a copy to profit cuz they charge so much its so they can say we reach x amount of people everyday..

It would work get a few record stores to put it on there shelves and could even charge bands that arent part of it a small fee...

Im down........

That's the way to do it, & start moving em units, get your names heard, and hit the streets like a movement.

Mass production eventually huh? Excellent Idea.

I say don't do it in word. People interested in doing this, should send me all their info/pics/answers and I'll make it look professional, as well as flashy enough to draw attention to it, ya know?

sounds just like combining a bunch of press kits.. not to make it sound less than what it is. still a good idea.

note to self: finish that freakin press kit bio this weekend.

is there room for beat makers in this magazine or is it for artists only? Cuz if i could i would like to be included in this project.

i say it should be for all elements of hip hop - as we are all a community whether we realize it or not - and i kind of disagree abuot it being a "collective" press kit - only in the sense that of course it could look like that for the first issue, but to do it over and over again, it really should focus on issues - for instance the posts that we put up on here could easily serve as "fodder" for the magazine - in some way . . . each artist gets to choose waht "subject" their 2nd article would be about . . . .

and oh yea it would be excellent if someone agreed to "Frame" it all with a good creative edge - thanks ausstin!!!

sounds like a good plan to me so when do we get started?

well if we are not going to use ms word, we need to pick a few "agents" or whatever to be the depository - or soemthing if my words are not makin any sense.

We can at least use ms word to create our own "starter" and if Austin is going to collect it all we can start sending him our "pages" as soon as he says so . . .

I think, for instance, the first issue could focus on 2 or three issues in Hip Hop - and we can take those from our posts here and various things in the media -

1) Should DJ Drama have been arrested? Is the "mixtape" a benefit or obstacle to independent hip hop careers?

2) Is Hip Hop "dead" or "out of control" as many in the media are saying?

3) What hip hop song had its most impact on your decision to become an artist?

I mean, there are plenty of things to have the "get to know" piece focused on . .. the promo piece is just that - a promo blurb about your next project, or presskit or what ever . . . I will post a sample of what got me started on this idea in a few . . .

It should be about all music enginers, producers, singers, writers, etc...

Break it down in sections in front of the mic, behind the boards , Unsigned Hype, Labels , Upcoming shows.

OK, basically the idea came from what Guitar Center sent to me. See attached file.

like on the our own mag pic - the page itself is a pic. of the artist on stage and in the window to the left there is text that could be the artist's response to 1 of the questions i posed earlier - then on the next page would be a "promo" page for a dif. artist altogther . . . that's 2 pages

our own mag2 just shows the same thing - one page advertising an item (1 of our sites, pages, cds, show dates, etc.) and another page where an artist is "the page" itself with a window or two of text discussing something related to hip hop . . .

That way, the final version all printed out actaully reads like a magazine

Hopefully, the luster of this idea has not worn off already!!! Perhaps we can use an initial deadline of . . . . Next Weekend -?

If you have a pic and text already, feel free to hit me up, I can do "some" Adobe Photoshop work - I have minimal skills, but I can definitely get r done!!!

cool - everyone's skills will make it all the more better

I figure we make the final version "fit" an 8.5 by 11 regular sheet of paper - but turned horizontal . . . that way - we can have multiple options on printing - it can be done per individual at their own home, or we can all chip in via paypal or something to pay for an actual "professional" printng . . ..

The samples i posted up are actaully the same "fit" - horizontal so actually i guess it should be written 11 by 8.5 . . .

If we are going to do a magazine, might as well actually pro print it man, no reason to half ass it ;) We are better than that. I'll hit up my homeboy and see how he started his off.

Mindset...

I agree with that...and not just because you're from the home state. Don't put all that effort into making it happen only to make it happen with an ass cheek missing or one eye blinking at you and the other one's on the floor.

If you're going to do an internet version, I would suggest .pdf (Acrobat Reader). If you're going the magazine route like you're talking, invest in the right paper and artist tools to make it into something that stacks up. No one will pick up something like this if it has the quality of half assed local flyers stuck all over the wall. It needs to stick out. And honestly, you would want to push this in more than just music stores. I'd suggest urban clothing outlets too (as an example).

It has promise, but it will take a while to get off the ground...nothing wrong with that.

Projects/compilations/mixtapes like HM (and HM2....yeah) would get good read off that.

Have your people call my people.
Fiev.

gotcha!!! i just hope it stays alive . . long enough to come to fruition!!!
