Problem with 25 ft. Computer Extension Cables

A "repeater" is a device that takes a weak digital signal coming in one end and sends an identical but stronger signal out the other end. Similar to it's analog counterpart, the "booster", which is basically just an amplifier.

I guess keyboard, mouse, and video would require "boosting" because they are analog.

I *think* that mice & keyboards are limited to 10 ft. (by standards, not real life) and video is limited to like 6ft or something. 25ft might be pushing it. But then this might not have anything to do with your problem.

And you'll probably never find out since keyboard & mouse boosters (up to 80m) run at around $200!! Maybe there's a cheaper version. Do a search for the following keywords: keyboard mouse extender booster

First try various combinations of the the mouse & keyboard with & without extentions and give us the results.

Over lunch, I changed the cables with the computer off and it still did the same thing. Unstability, etc... I'll check into the booster issue and let you know what I find. If the booster is too much, I may try ordering a shorter cable (it would only be about $12 with shipping).

As many of you do, I have my studio setup in one of our spare bedrooms. So this room is my control room and recording space most of the time. In order to cut down on the computer noise tracking vocals, I bought 25ft extension cables for the monitor, keyboard and mouse from ( www.cables.com ) so I could put the computer in a closet.

My problem is that when I plug in the keyboard extension cable, the mouse goes crazy. It jumps around the monitor screen and cannot be positioned correctly. When I take the keyboard extension out, the mouse and monitor extension cables work flawlessly. What's happening here???

P.S. I've switched the keyboard cable with the mouse cable to see if there was a problem with the keyboard cable. There doesn't seem to be a problem with either cable. Any help would be appreciated.

Here's a stupid thing to look into: Are you sure that you've got the mouse plugged into the mouse port and they keyboard plugged into the keyboard port? And did you plug this stuff in with the computer off? Mixing up your mouse and keyboard (assuming both are PS/2) will cause this behavior, as will unplugging & replugging the mouse & keyboard with the computer on (*sometimes*).

Other than that my guess is that you'll need a repeater of some sort for that much length. They do make boxes for just this sort of thing.

Thanks for the info Slackmaster2K. I am sure that I have the mouse and keyboard in their proper ports. Thinking back, I believe that I did plug and unplug the cables while the computer was unplugged. I'll repeat your suggestion when I get home and let you know what's happening. As to the "repeater" that you mentioned, could you point out a site or place that I could get one?
