I've been pulling together a 10 track all audio composition in CWPA 8. It all sounds great and I've automated the mixdown. I still need to tweak the automation but I will address that in another post.

According to the book I have (CW Power), the export can be done in one step by selecting tools>>mix down to audio/export to file and you are done.

Problem is the book is geared to PA9 and I have 8. In 8 there are two functions under tools...mixdown audio and export to file. When I mixdown to audio it asks me what tracks to mix to...

When I pick a blank track it mixes down to two MIDI tracks and I get no playback...what am I doing wrong?? Please help.

Thanks! zip >>

Track problem

Zip,
On that track that you have mixed down to. Have you set your balance @ 64 and your volume @127 ?

If you want to mixdown to a .wav file (to burn onto a CD) then choose the export to file command. Or are you trying to mixdown to another track within the project? Not sure why it's mixing to MIDI tracks, I just tried it and it mixed down to an audio track (do you have any MIDI tracks or are they all audio)?

All but the console automation "track" is audio. I have everything panned in the center to start and the output volume on the main @ -1dB to avoid a clip.

I will try the export to file command. Maybe I got confused when PA9 has a mix/export all-in-one gizmo and I was thinking in PA8 it was two separate steps....

But no...I'm not trying to mix tracks to another track within the console.

Thanks guys!!:) I'll try the export file and reply.

I finally got it to work but for those who have CW PA 8 use the following steps...

- Mix it down to all audio
- Highlight all tracks you want to include in the final mix
- Select >>tools<<
- Select >> mix audio<<
- choose a blank track when the prompt comes up ( a blank one with another blank below if it it is a stereo file)

After CW mixes it down highlight ONLY the one or two it mixes to...

- Select >>tools<<
- Select >>export audio<<

WALA!!

Seems in PA8 it is TWO separate steps...I guess that's a good reason for upgrading to PA9 or Sonar...

That's kinda odd that you have to do it in two steps, so you have to do the mixdown to two empy tracks and then export those two tracks to .wav files? How wierd. In PA 9 you can export all the tracks to a .wav file without having to mixdown to another empy track.

Now that you know you can get it to work, have you tried it without doing the internal mixdown first? Also, instead of highlighting the ones you do want to be exported, just try muting the tracks that you don't want to be exported (without highlighting anything).

Glad you got something to work. :)

Tekker....

Yeah I did....no go. :( Did exactly as you descibed in your previous post and it would not mix down.

After I beat my frickin' head against the monitor for 3 hours I drank a beer...thought about and said....hmmmm....

So I drank another beer and tried the two step process.

Morales of the story??

- If a CWPA 8 is only around a short time...purchase V 9....

- If all else fails.....LEAVE THE PC and drink some beer.... :)

Thanks again for the help!!

I Think I have the answer

Zip,

If all of your tracks are recorded as audio, you go to the menu choose "Tools" choose "Mix Down Audio". Once Cakewalk has mixed the tracks down make sure that you set your port to the proper audio port. If you have not set this properly you will not get sound from the "mixed down" tracks.

To "Export Audio", highlight your mixed down tracks. Go to menu choose "Tools" Choose "Export Audio" name and save file.

I found a bug in cakewalk 8.04. If you have recorded a project make sure that your audio tracks have no empty tracks between the tracks suchas Audio on tracks 1-4, 5&6 are blank and audio on 7-10. The "mixdown feature doesn't work properly when empty tracks exist between recorded tracks. Do a track sort or move all of the tracks up and leave no empty tracks.

Yup Landie...

That's exactly what I did and it worked. :) Thanks for the tip about the empty track thing...I'll avoid that.

Ok, so you can export 2 stereo tracks right? If you can, then can you export just two regular tracks (for ex. guitar and vocals)? I'm just wondering if there is a track limit that can be exported or if it just wants you to mixdown (for some reason) even if you only have one or two tracks.

(Why don't you just upgrade to PA 9 and save your self the trouble. :D)

Tekker...

Not sure why it requires a mixdown first. I actually was mixing down 4 vocal tracks and a keys track into an IMPORTED .wav file.

I would upgrade to PA 9 but since my sound card SUCKS...I have decided to buy the Digi001 set-up with Protools LE. Not that I dislike CWPA but since I need a soundcard and a breakout box.........

thanks again man...
