Preamp for Rode NTK?

Well, this thread got dark fast, but anyway, when I had an NTK it often liked an old Presonus MP20 (the Jensen one). Here's a male vocal done with an NTK into that pre that I think sounds purdy fancy pants:

Click on the remake of "Never My Love" or Every Other Thought"

All the vocals, lead and bkgd, were done with this chain into a Waves Renaissance comp on an aux on input bussed to the track. I'm sure I have some female vox with this chain up somewhere as well...Not too shabby. The NTK can get spitty at times but at others is just right ;-)

I don't think anyone cares at this point, not even me. Last time I try to start small talk.
If you want small talk, you shouldn't lash out at anyone trying to talk with you. Being hostile don't show much, except that you don't have respect for the other posters, which makes them respond in kind. My "intervention" was merely to try and keep things from heading quite so far down. Didn't work, but I tried.

I already have two Neves, a UA 610, Joe Meek One Q...

That's a nice group you have there and I think a Grace would round out the selection nicely for a pre of uncolored, natural amping. I think once I get the bucks the Grace 101 will be my choice for my K2. How do you like that OneQ? I had my eye on that one for a while.

When someone gives you a rep comment like "If you have a grand and can't figure it out on your own then you're a brainless idiot", I'm not going to be nice. At that point, there is nothing you can do.

There's ALWAYS something you can do. Like ignore that turd. See?

The turd is someone in the thread, they at least weren't pussy enough to not sign it.

I've got an NTK, a Sytek mpx4a and an FMR RNP. I like the sound better through the Sytek.....a little less hyped through the Sytek and a bit smoother.....to my ears. The Grace suggestion is probably good too.

Love my Sytek.

:D Whoo! That's a doozy. Actually, I can think of something I can do for the guy/girl who made that comment: Buy him/ her a beer.

But that's beside the point. Anyway, if you were only trying to "make small talk," then why did you mention you had a thousand bucks to spend? I mean, call me crazy, but one might think that would at least imply that you were looking for more than small talk. One might even go out on a limb and suggest that you were looking to drop some of that money of yours - that you casually mentioned in small talk - on a new mic pre.

I said in another post I should have left that out because it really doesn't matter. Either way, not many people answered my question. Most give me the "buy the best you can buy" crap.

I just got an NTK, which I'm starting to like. What preamps are people using their their NTK? I got a budget of $1k.

Joe...I'm gonna make a suggestion (getting back to the original question)...based on what you posted, you already have some serious mic pres...I think that if you haven't upgraded the tube in your NTK, you're missing out on a very inexpensive upgrade that will improve the mic's overall performance (regardless of which preamp you choose)...the stock Sovtek 6922 that Rode uses doesn't compare to the vintage NOS 6922/6DJ8/E88CC variations you can find for upgrades...read these 2 older threads for more details...

Thanks for the idea, I may have to get a few tubes to test them out.

Alright, then Joe.

Since I'm feeling really generous today, and because I would like to put this matter behind us once and for all ...

I'll let you in on a little secret. Don't get the best you can buy. You see, a good bunch of us on this board are all sort of in on this secret, where we deliberately try to steer people towards the wrong gear -- and usually very expensive gear at that. When all along, we're secretly laughing amongst ourselves as all these newbs spend a ton of money on crap gear. This technique benefits us, because it allows us to maintain our sound quality advantage over others.

So anyway, here's the dirty little secret: The NTK is the bomb when used with one of the 48-channel Behringer mixers. No kidding. Just get one of those, and run with it. I'm going to erase this post after a few hours, because I don't want to get in trouble for letting others in on it. Keep this info secret, though, and maybe we'll let you in on our club.

Grace 101!

Go with the Grace 101.

Purchase a used one on Ebay!

It will not only make your ntk sound good but it will make anything you put into it sound good. With the exception of a few as always.
