Correct. One solo. But I thought we were breaking it up into three sections to allow more people to contribute. The solo part goes through the F#m - A - E - F#m progression four times before going into the bridge part to end the solo. I'll take the first 2 times through the F#m - A- E - F#m, someone else can take the second 2 times through and someone else can have the bridge part.

Since the solo needs to be double or triple tracked anyway to sound like the original why not have each person record the whole solo and then they can be mixed together.

Sounds like a winner to me! But it's propman's baby and I didn't mean to take over the thread. I was just throwing out suggestions like everyone else was, and offered to host the project from my site, so if I stepped on propman's toes, or anyone elses, many apologies!

Nah. you didn't. I think it is a great idea. all those diffrent guitars mixed may sound really cool. I may even give the solo a shot. By all means, make suggestions. I am really greatful that you gave us the use of your site, and made these suggestions. If it would have been left up to me, this may have been history a long time ago.

Is the goal to make the song sound as much as the original as possible? If so, why not just play the CD?

Because my CD is scratched! :)

But, you're right, we should try to keep the original identity, but never exactly the same.

I think it's more about bringing a bunch of different people together, playing a bunch of different parts, to recreate a great song that all of the individual people involved really admire.

Exactly! To me Pink Floyd tunes are works of art and deviating too far from the original would ruin it. With so many variables involved even if everyone tried to play just like the record it would never sound exact. It takes much more skill and talent to recreate a song like this than it does to be lazy and improvise a bunch of butchered riffs and pretend to be creative.

I wasn't suggesting you paint a mustache on the Mona Lisa. Your response indicates that you aren't interested in the rest of what I may want to add to the discussion. Preach to the choir you will.

Even though we might try to reproduce the song the way it was played 30 years ago, we cannot do it exactly the same, because we are not David Gilmore, Roger Waters, Nick Mason. We don't have the same instruments, amps, voices, or mics. We can "aim" for the same sound or expression, but in the end it will be our sound coming out. Otherwise, we might as well do as Pinky says, and play the CD. And also, if we want to be really strict, the original recording has many tempo variations. It doesn't follow a click!

BTW, I heard some really good female voices on this forum. It would be great if someone would volunteer for the backing vocals.

Hell, Pink Floyd themselves couldn't reproduce the song. The acoustics the tracks were recorded in could never be replicated. And if you want to get down to the minutest detail, the actual instrument sounds could not be replicated, etc. But, sheesh, 'play the cd?' Where would Van Halen be if Ted Templeman said, "If you want to hear 'You Really Got Me' play the CD... or a myriad of other artists who cover other peoples songs.

Hmmmm... maybe they need to be "drafted"...

Then why bother? Is this a group of counterfeiters, or artists? I'll guess artists.

A bad rendition would ruin it. Different doesn't automatically mean bad.

You just don't get it. We are trying to pay tribute to an iconic band by faithfully recreating the song to the best of our abilities. This requires far more talent than hacking out some half assed version and claiming to be "artistic" as an excuse for butchering the song. It will be hard enough to sound similar to Pink Floyd without trying to sound different.

I agree that a faithful rendition would be much harder than a half-assed cover but I didn't expect that any of you would do it half-assed. I disagree that anything short of a replica is half-assed though.

By the way, do you mind if us observers download and play around with your raw tracks? Would be fun to mess around with in the DAW...

:)

I need to buy some better toys so I can come play in the collab sandbox... ;) :D

I put together some raw rhythm tracks, just guitar and bass to go along with the drums for people to use as a guide. I'll be uploading a rough mix by early afternoon, hopefully.

Ok, I put together a quick rhythm track as a guide. It's just bass and rhythm guitar along with NightFlight's drum track. It's a quick mix but that's ok because this is ONLY A GUIDE! Now get busy with the rest of it you guys! ;)

I'll get on to my keyboards during the next couple of days.. hopefully be done by the weekend.

:)

Cool! I'll try to get a solo up by the end of the weekend. I already did one, but I don't like the way it sounds. :(

We still need someone to mix & master! And if somebody wants to do the rhythm & bass parts again they can do that too!
