This was posted in another forum, but I think it is more appropriate in this forum. Pentium IIIs have a cooling fan that would be a noise problem with miked recordings in the same room as the PC. I've heard that Athlons don't have a cooling fan. Does that give them an advantage over Pentiums?

some people put their computer in a closet or something and run cables... I put a blanket over it and record across the room. It comes out just fine. The fan noise is not a problem with intruments, but for vocals I run cable and record in a different room.

Never used a PIII but I'm afraid my athlon has a whacking great fan bolted to the side!

Yep. If one of your friends told you that his Athlon doesn't have a fan then he's in for a big suprise real soon :)

You can buy CPU's OEM and they typically will not come with heatsinks or fans. That doesn't mean that they're not required, however :)

My P3 goes GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!

try recording with that lol!

well now & again anyway!

i have no probs when its not going GRRRR!!!

just use your mic as far away as possible and i can`t see you having any probs!

1st determine which fan is going "grrrr". Is it the CPU fan, the case fan, or the P/S fan? Second, get it fixed. If it's the CPU fan and the "grrrrrr" stops then either the fan is spinning freely....or the fan isn't spinning. Not a fun thing to wonder about. :) A decent fan will make very little noise.

OK, thanks for your replies, guys. I guess I was misinformed about the Athlons not having a fan. Looks like I'll still be getting a P3.
