'Off Alone'

Can someone take a look at this for me? It's the one called 'Off Alone'. My buddy through it out during a jam. The rhythm is one take, but he has this weird fingerstyle where he kinda plods along some bass notes and I think it fills it out nicely.

The picking is really cool too.

I like simple written, yet heart stirring singing and playing like this...just as much as the more complicated, mind blowing power driven songs.

I like this 'just as it is"....I wouldn't change a thing(except add another minute of play time to it) ...so live and very 'feeling'...kudos !!!

I hear a lot more Damien Rice.

There's some timing weirdness, but it's to be expected with what he's playing on the acoustic. This is the kind of thing I can listen to on a loop. I wish the singer would push it a little more towards the end and get out of falsetto, but it's all really nice.

Couple of brain darts on the lead.

Not bad. Nice playing on the acoustic. Good tone. Pretty well done for just laying it down out of the blue. I personally don't care for the vocals. Not my style. I could hear some subtle strings working with this one.........and new vocals.

yeah I dig the acoustic pickin', it's a nice lil' piece. I don't mind the vocals so much... she's kind of holding back though. I kept expecting her to open up and go from that breathy whispery kinda deal to her voice at full volume.

sounds good , i like the pickin, as greg said some subtle strings would be class and some steady drums with brushes and an acoustic bass or an upright even better.... i like the melody of the vocal not so much the vocal itself, its a little winey but thats just MO(hes not as bad as james blunt), im sure the singer is happy with his vocal and thats all that matters, plus there is an audience out there (especially in IRL) for his style

Hey all thanks for yur comments.

First off it's a guy snging but I can see why you'd think otherwise! It's been said before He has a very weak voice, I was thinking of having him track another lower vocal part.

I agree that the song is a little sparse; I'm much more into more invoved arrangements, and I really wanted to do strings in this one. The problem was the guy could play fine to a metronome for about a minute or so, but kinda lost the run of it. I do think it suits brushes and a cello ro something light like that.

Chris I'm nto sure what you mean by the lead, but if you mean that it sucks I completely agree. He asked me to do a lead secton, but nothing on the acoustic would stand out because it was already so acoustically involved. That left the elctric and I don't like it...may have to take a shot at this with the nylon string.

No, not at all man. Quite the opposite.

A "brain dart" (to me) is an area where some upper midrange frequencies start kinda' cascading on each other, and when you're listening loudly on headphones, it's like a dart shooting into your brain. Just an area that needs to be tamed with a wide, shallow dip between probably 2-4K. I only noticed that happen on the solo...the tone was superb for my taste

tele, it's a very pretty song. it reminds me of damien rice also. i guess every breathy, irish voice gets pegged that way. i think retracking with a focus on timing would be a major improvement here.

Nice playing my man, I like that finger style. This is the type of stuff my wife likes, Damien Rice meets James Blunt. Not my personal cup o' tea but I can recognise a good song when I hear one.
