Tell me how you think this will sound? I'm not done yet, but am taking a chance.

I have taken the body of an MXL 992, gutted it, installed a Sony C-37/38 capsule and built the circuit for a Telefunken U47 using an EF14 tube. I'm also using a Cinemag transformer that is meant to be an upgrade for the U47 transformer.

I'm thinking that because the 992 has a more open grill it will sound pretty good. I removed the inner screen from the grill to lessen the reflections. The grill on the C-38 is pretty dense, so this should open up the sound quite a bit.
I'm going to base the power supply on the Royer mod PS, since the voltages are close.

Do you think it will be a decent match? Should I try a capsule more like the Peluso CEK-367 instead? Is the Sony capsule suitable?

Maybe I just have the jitters because I don't know what to expect. I'm hoping I get a sound similar to a real U47, since I'll never be able to afford one. There's no way I'd ever be able to get my hands on an M7 capsule.

What do you think?

I think you have too much time on your hands. Nah, sounds pretty well thought out, I'd love to hear a track or two.

...I think that before you commit to such an endeavor, take proper precautions and build me one first...just to be safe... :D

Who knows... depends... ;)

Your EF14 better be quiet. The C37 is quite a low output capsule, so you might get into S/N issues.

95V Royer is kinda on a low side. If you want to use cheapo transformers then I'd do something like Gyraf G7 PSU. Also, Antique Supply has some smallish 120V/12V trafos for under $20.

Me thinks that you won't get anything similar to a real U47, unless you make grill construction exactly the same, use M7, VF14, original Hauffe, etc.

Don't take me wrong, you could make a good mic, maybe even "better" than U47, for what it is, but not similar.

If you want the sound at least going in the same direction, I am afraid you will need to use a good old PVC M7.

Oh, and never say never. Who knows? May be one day, if you ask me nicely, and I will be kind enough, I might consider selling my UM70 with PVC M7 in a good shape. Maybe even for a resonable price ;)
