No Knowledge of Audio. XD

Hey, my name is Kris, you can call me Fox, if that name isn't stolen by someone yet. I have no knowledge of audio at all. My hopes is to learn several fields of editing and be a multi-talented CGI Artist. Be able to be called in on several types of jobs and travel around the country.

My first question is this: I have a complete Bose 901 Series IV, speakers, equalizer, and receiver. It was my dad's and he gave it to me simple because he's to lazy to fix it or sell it. I wanted to see what I could get from bose through a trade in method and was wondering if you guys would recommend bose as worth while for audio editing speaker systems to connect to a computer. Or if its worth more to fix it and buy/construct a different system. Also, headphone recommendations would be great too.

Also, is there a website or something that helps train your ears for the difference between something basic and something labeled as "True Audiophile" sound? lol

Headphones-I like the Audio Technica ATH-m50. very good for the money-$130
I think you would do well to get some near field monitors. I have never tried mixing/editing on Bose 901's but I recently popped for some proper NFM's (Yamaha HS80) after trying a number of home stereo speakers, and found the NFM's to be far superior.

Bose have a reputation for having "interesting" ideas of how audio should sound--and "interesting" rarely means "accurate" in the Bose stable of products.

The idea of monitor speakers is to sound neutral rather than artificially good. If you're serious about mixing, I'd suggest you sell the Bose set up for the best price you can get and invest in modern monitors.
