listening to it...2nd mix, I guess

the main thing that bugged me was the HUGE whompy kick drum sound. Like someones drum that I HAD to stuff a blanket in.

Other than that... sometimes I'm not to fond of lead licks coming from left or right field (panning wise).

Great tune and has that "Americana" feel to it.

you could add or take away a lot of stuff in this tune... It makes the mind come up with all kinds of ideas (ie...sax solo, blistering female backups, tambourine.....you get the idea)

Loved the repeat echos on the vocals.. right up MY alley!!

BINGO! That's what I was thinking, I think, but even if I wasn't, it's dead on. I like this one a ton, btw.

Ya Ya Ya!
That about sums it up!:D

Great rockin tune Crawdad,I dig the guitars.
Lyrics are deep and personal, nice word play.

Your stuff just gets better and better man.
(If that's possible!)

I really enjoyed this one, hits home.

Thanks,
Pete

Man is that a sweet song!!!

I like your voice in this style. This reminds me of the group "Blackhawk". In fact your voice would fit right in with them. It sounds great in this style. You should do more of this kind of stuff (except, I happen to like your dirges) :D

Bass and kick sound a little thumpy to me. Remember though...I'm on computer speakers so take that for what it's worth.

Good job man. Can't say much more than that. I think I'm gonna have to write some uptempo stuff too. I'm caught in the dirge syndrome myself :D.

Oh..btw... The TBC plug in stands for...

A buddy of mine who worked at Chicago Trax studio (now defunct :() was letting me in for some after hours free tracking. We got done with a song and he said...man we sure could use TBC on this one. I was thoroughly confused. I thought he was talking about an effect or something. They just laughed and explained, it stood for "Three Black Chicks" :D

What a great plug that would be though huh? Just sing the lead and in comes that smoking hot soulful BG trio :D. I would use that one all the time :D.

Nice work Al. Big thumbs up :)

Ah.... long time, no Al....

If by "Lazarus" you mean "Superstar" .... sure. Have to echo the drums thing (uh... did that even come up? Again? Sorry, haven't read the thread :D) A little strange on the snare drum sound... but otherwise... perfect-amundo.

Awesome guitars, and vocals as usual. Your vocal doubles in the choruses are always so professional sounding. A complete understanding of country and country-like composition, you have... though this heads toward the roots-rock thing very nicely.

Sorry, but by default, when something completely dumbfounds me as to how to critique it.... when it's completely beyond any help I could give you, this is what happens...

GUSH

BTW thanks for the shout in the other thread. What've we been up to? livin some, dying some. keepin it real. You know. All the usual cliches. :)

OK. Let me catch up on the last comments.

Stratomaster--I probably have too much going on in those choruses. If I'd follow my own damn advice and keep it stripped down, it would probably be better. My faulty logic says: if it rocks with bass and two guitars, it must be better if I add a few more things! Thanks for the comments--will listen and play with it.

Khompewter--I was trying to rock out a little, yeah! I'm afraid that if I tried to do Pink Floyd, it would end up with a country feel, lol! I've always been a sucker for that Segar/Springsteen/Mellencamp populist rock thing--JCM being a distant third on the list. Its real hard to get the mixes just right, though. I'm digging getting opinions and ideas here--it really helps me on something like this.

mixmkr--Consensus seems to be to get some different kick sound and a new snare. I know the feel I want, but not sure about which sound to use. if it were the 80's, I'd get a big gated reverb and we'd be done, but that was then as they say! Almost panned the solo center--lol! hey, a BANJO might be cool in a couple spots!

ChrisHarris--the secret is run it through the big grey box! Then get out on the highway and crank it up as loud as possible while on the freeway! Thats the feel I want to get, anyway! Thanks for dropping by! Coming back to Juliet soon. Its in transition and I am a bit lost as to what to do. Waiting for that light bulb to go on.

Museman--Thanks! Hey, looks like we could be collab-mates here! We need to figure out what we want to do!

Jagular--Seems to be universal hatred for that kick drum. I gotta find something else! I want to keep things up for a while. One can only get reflective and philosophical for so long before it starts to backfire. I'm sure I'll dirge again soon anyway!

Participant--its great to see you back! You are a needed member of the madness here! Hope things have been more good than bad. Anyway--yes--some drum work still needed. I think its a cakewalk--just a matter of finding one of about 200 kik samples that fits in. So, have you been doing any recording? Still digging the RNP? I still listen to "Son, You're a Disappointment" from time to time--its so cool! I know thats not the real title, but thats what I call it.

Later guys, and thanks to all. I'm gonna keep working on this one...

Yeah... very Americana.

Noticing a little bit too much compression on the vox... maybe even a little distorted towards the end. (3:20 ish) I dunno... could be the MP3. (you should try VBR encoding, btw. :p)

Also, there's an acoustic git on the left that's a little thin. It's more noticable towards the end. I dunno... needs a little more body...

As usual, I dig your slide guitar... I kinda found myself wanting that lead solo at 2:00-ish to be a little more "up-front".... but that could be just 'cause I like your slide playing. :p

Beautiful song. I loved the melody. I loved the emotion in the vocals. Great harmonies. I loved the tone on all the guitars... bass too. Crawdad - tell me what this is lacking from a pro mix. Maybe I'd know if I were a pro I guess. But it sure sounds good.

Something at 1:47 - a small vocal oddity I think. Small pop at 2:12.

Minor nits. Great job.

I love it Crawdad. I would like to hear the lead voc's come up a bit or maybe it is just my system.

Excellent job and again you inspired me!

Have you written songs before? ;) :D
You have the craft down. I feel lyrics and melody are the heart of a good country/rock song and you have that nailed as usual.

Nice work all around.

I won't make mix comments and I'll blame it on my listening environment (Ignore Junior status here:p )

Seriously, from what I could tell the mix sounded good. Vocals had that great quality for the song. Kick seemed strong but I think the song calls for it to some extent. It drives the song and makes you want to clap your hands in beat. Maybe it could come down some, but I will leave that up to the experts.

Great job!

nice one! I have to be listening to a remix because I don't hear much of what was mentioned except for the kick.. It sounds good, but almost too meaty and loud for this type of sound.. It would work well in a wall of guitar situation but might be too boomy for the 'target audience.' Top notch tune as always! Nice yell during the fade out..

throwing 5 into the ring..

I am listening to this as I type

Pure talent! excellent stuff. Your voice reminds of a singer that used to play rock out of Pittsburgh. His name was Joe Gruchecky.

listen to V2. i like the drums. they are very full! the reverb on the bass drum is unique. not sure if it matches the rest of the instruments but it sure sounds cool! sounds like a 30 inch bass drum!

different style than i've heard from you before

nice vocals and harmonies.

Al, this is really really good. The vocal sounds a little different than usual...added some tube, maybe? Sounds awesome.

Even the drums sound great on this. Love that punchy kick. Spot-on guitar work. Tight all around. Beautiful harmonies.

Holds up nicely at loud volume too....at least on my monitors. I think the freq ranges are covered nicely, even at different volumes. Sounds like a very good tracking job.

Great energy too. Nice one!

The one thing if anything that I'm not sure about is the placement of the slide. My habits tell me to center it more, but my ears tell me the mix is balanced as it is so...no help there, if any is even needed.

very clean recording.......i'm not crazy about the lead tone, but that's a completely subjective comment.....it's mixed very well.......good singing..........nice song, the acoustics sound great
