Read: If you take into account that my understanding is warped and my definitions are incorrect, I'm right.

Ban the troll.

he doesn't even record as far as I can tell. Guys like this never have any recordings for us to hear.

If

and you

then one of these things is distorting.

That first quote was a quote of a quote not my quote.
and the 2nd quote was mine and I already admitted since I quoted that, I was wrong and the cassette sounded better...

REREAD MY OPENING POST AT MY HUMBLE ATTITUDE:

Just wanted to start a thread in hopes that other guys besides myself think like I do about analog (open reel/cassette based) recordings. Ive always purposely gotten "clean" sounding recordings (with no audible distortion) out of my recorders. Maybe its just cause Im a perfectionist and had new machines back then and always used the best tape for the machine, kept the heads cleaned etc etc during recording. Ive never had audible distortion on my analog recordings unless I really really kept the needles buried in the red.
I hope to hear from some of you that have had the wonderful experiences with tape as I have and still do....

We're all aware of that. No one listens to A Night At The Opera and says, oh wow...that's badly distorted.
The thing is, you seem to be able to craft an argument out of it.

I could go and start a thread about how my mac never needs defragging or virus scanning.
It's a fact, but it will just start a flame war. I won't come out of it well, so what's the point?

You are name calling now Lt. Bob...and that was NOT a "snotty" statement at all anyhow.
didn't call you a name ..... where is the name I called you?

And yes, it was obviously a snotty remark about "Bobbsy knowing everything".
The problem you have is that you see name calling when it doesn't exist and you think it's ok for you to throw insults around.

prozac10c.webp

I hear it works great for OCD.........

Well you the one that used the word "snotty" not me. and Bobbsy does come off as a "know it all" and I did NOT start this thread to offend the intelects about the technical definition of distortion!!!

Well then....just let it go.

There's been a bunch of people trying to talk you down from your "distortion" ledge....and all you do is repeat the same thing over and over about what "distortion" means to you.

You seem to think that audio is only about how you define it....yet you want to discuss it here with others.
Well then, you have accept the standard terminology and definitions, and not just go on your own partial views, based solely on your personal understandings and observations.
Analog audio recording has been around a long time....so this isn't about discovery of new technology and terminology.

Maybe a combination of:

prozac10c.webp

and:

Viagra.webp

Will do the trick for you. ;)

Ok I shall try and "swallow the pills" (double meaning here) :o

WHOA, WHOA, WHOA ..... Now come on. That will be quite enough out of you.
Most of the People in this community are life long professionals in their field of audio recording and as far as Bob goes he has retired successfully from the field of radio/television.
He is a treasure trove of TRUE knowledge and you my good man should listen/learn be thankfully. And above all say THANK YOU.

Now lets have an apology and try to realize who you are addressing in this community.

Oh yeah! I have been asked to ask you to join the old time pros in the cave forum at the bottom of the forum topic page. We all have some thoughts for you. just post this same question there and we will answer this debate much more sufficient.
Just wait till after the 4th for most of us will be with our grandchildren for the holiday.

Excelsior! ;)

It matters not a whit what YOUR definition of distortion is. There's only one correct one. From the Oxford English Dictionary:

Note definition 3. You can find similar in any technical manual or glossary.

Sorry "mr. no it all" but I don't go by the dictionary I go by by what my ears tell me. And if I don't hear distortion then I don't call it distorted.

Now who are you to tell me to apologize...just another "mr. no it all" right ???

Every one of you guys can gang up on me again, but I never started the argument and never intended to. Read my opening post again and see how the first few people replied to it, that's what kind of responses I was looking for. Not all of this over analyzing and nit-picking of definitions of DISTORTION.
