A fun thing to play with is, take an old deck, disconnect the bias wires from the erase head (or put in a switch). Record one 'pass', then record over that. It takes skill and advance figuring to make a third pass, and have the the volume of the first pass be where you planned it, and not have the third pass too loud, or the whole session distorted. From top to bottom the tape will be a mosaic of magnetic patterns of all three parts, truly 'mixed'.
