I have 850 for a mic and a preamp, its not that much but I know i can get something fairly good for that.

Which two would you get, for male rap vocals, mid to high voice, untreated room.

Im really thinking of just getting a cheaper mic (at3035) a GT brick and a reflexion filter.

Do you think that the 3035 would be that much worse than the 4033...

btw I also see a lot that recommend the SM7 for rap, but i was told by the person who sold me my mic that that I didnt want a dynamic. Plus I would need a good pre for that.

I bought a Oktava MK-319 last week and really like what I'm hearing from it! I also own a Rode NT-1a, Studio Projects B1 and have an MXL v67g coming!

The MK-319 sounds less toppy and harsh on the sources I've tried it. I'll be giving it a proper work out tomorrow!

For a while the Oktava MK-319's were made in China but they are being made in Russia again now! I don't think you could go wrong with one of these!

And you're happy with the mic he did sell you? Be careful where you get your advice... never from someone who stands to gain from your purchase

It's not one that's been mentioned before but I've had great results from the M-Audio Solaris with rap vocals. As mentioned previously the trick is to get in super close (my pop filter is 1 inch away from the mic, my mouth 2 inch from the filter) but the boost in bass and mids on relatively high-pitched is really nice. I'm running that through the nothing special pre in the Ozonic and the room is huge with no treatment at all. I'll try and upload a sample for you.

Everybody else I speak to about recording rap vocals goes nuts for the AT mics, me personally I've never liked them at all for rap vocals. I've also had pretty good results with the Blue mics (namely the Baby Bottle and the Bottle).

So yeah once you've got the source to your liking (a bit fuller) I'd give some serious consideration to the compression. I like PSPs Vintage Warmer for my own vocals but my next purchase will be the RNC after hearing some incredible results with it.

The oktava sounds good but is over 500 with the upgrade....

To "mofo" yeah i see what your saying, i thought the same thing until i went in the other day wanting to buy a preamp and refelxion and he said not to until i got my computer right which i have done now.

Yes, compression would be next, when i fully understand what it does...

Thanks again everybody, you've been great.

My Oktava isn't modded and so far I really like the sound of this mic!

It may well b an improvement as it is and you could always get the mod further down the line when you can afford it!

il look into it. The only real reason im looking into the at3035 is because of two things.

1) I have read a bunch of different people who have the AT4033, AT4050, ect that like there AT3035 as much or more on their vocals. (Im paying 300 more for the 4033, it BETTER be better lol)

2) Because i found one locally that i may be able to pick up and return the 4033, saving almost 300 to put towards a preamp.

OK. i think ive slimmed it to two options.

1) AT3035 with a GT brick, and possibly a reflexion filter. to save a little money possibly.

OR

1) Shure SM7b with a grace m101 (would this be too clean? Whats another warmer option for a pre?) I wouldnt get the reflection filter on this because the sm7 would hopefully be better on its own than the 4033 was.

People say the SM7 isnt loud enough for rap, or it has a bland sound, what is your opinion on this. I am aggressive sometimes, and low others. I do have noise in my room, (computer fan, laundry... lol) and the sm7 hopefully should take this out of the equation, but thats what im trying to figure out.

LMK.

Ok. I got the SM7 and the RNP

One question.

I am using the SM7>RNP>Mbox.

How do i connect this. I bought a 1/4 TRS to 1/4 TRS. Which inputs do I use? Im a noob to this.

Thanks.

yeah i definitely want to double track vocals.

But i still dont know how to hook it up from the RNP to the Mbox 2

nobody???

I ran the TRS 1/4 from the "Insert" A on the BACK of the RNP to the "Line TRS" on the BACK of my Mbox 2. It worked, I just wanted to know if this is right.

Thanks.

You should switch your RNP connection to "out" A

I did it, but how do i know for sure that its bypassing the mbox pre?

...you want "Line Out" on your RNP and "Line In" on your Mbox...line inputs bypass the pre circuit...I don't own an Mbox, but usually on these audio interfaces, the mic pre is accessed by XLR inputs, not 1/4" inputs...

thanks everyone.

BTW anyone who has experience with the SM7 can you reccomend some mic techniques for it because it does get boomy a little easy. Im using it for hip hop vocals, with the original filter on,

Thanks.

Try a bit off angle... and back just a bit

Lazed, im debatin on gettin the SM7 for a hiphop vocal project Im workin on and I think my voice is pretty similar to ur, maybe a tad lower pitched. Hows that SM7 workin out for you?

Ive said time and time again...a LDC has no place in front of a rap or hip hop artist..the life of the mic will be a short one...the SM7 is the best thing to put in front of one...the Line6 UX2 is an interface that all of us here have been waiting for...it comes with Abelton Live...has built in modelers that you can run the beats through...and your vocals.

I have no solution to your lyric problems...but Im sure theres alot of white boys in the burbs that have the life experience to punch those up...lol.

for inspiration I have a video here of the woman that invented rap (No kidding this is the first ever rap single)
