Shout It Out

New member
This is a new song from myself. I realize some of my fades are terrible and i should probably have fixed them before it was too late. I don't consider myself a singer really and rarely sing on my songs, so this was an attempt at something different. Tried using different mics for this project so the mix may sound kind of weird used e609 on guitar and some weird dynamic mic for vocals which i usually use a condenser for. 4 mics on drums.

Here is a mix with some fake mastering:

Here is an unmastered mix:

Recorded in my basement with a Korg d3200. Thanks for any feedback.

I really liked that. The laid back vocal was great and sounded natural. I'm no recording guru so I'll focus my comments on just the song - and it was nice. Had a kinda early Lemonheads/Fountains of Wayne feel to it.

In short, cool :)

nice song. vocals sound mark hoppus inspired.

a couple things. im not sure if you can mix on a DAW or if its all done in your Korg box?

snare needs some help. its lacking any attack. try using a high ratio compressor and then playing with its attack time, trying to let the attack of the drum through unaffected, while sqaushing the body of the snare. or try sample enhancement. logic makes this easy. also, snare is a little too in-your-face and could use a touch of rev and maybe level adjustment. kick needs a little more attack too.

i think the vocals are too dry sounding, they need a little rev and delay. also i think the guitars are a little too wet sounding and creating a mush of guitars behind the vocals.

and finally i think the levels are just a little outta whack. with less effects on the guitars i think you'll be able to bring em up more in the mix and fill it out a little more. take the harmony vocals down a bit. set the snare back a little. and im not sure if that is bass im hearing or not, but either the bass needs to be brought up in the mix or it needs to be put in.

with that said, i enjoyed the song on a whole. and mixing is all about personal preference. so you may or may not agree with what I hear.

the bass is a really low mixed in keyboard as I don't own a bass at the moment. The snare head is pretty much shot which is probably why the snare sounds not so great.

Interesting about the vocals, i have them with a good amount of verb and some delay. The guitar is mostly clean and only has chorus on it at the end. The lead does have delay though. I guess i use the harmony vocals up a little higher to mask my real voice. I might try a mix with the backups a little lower though.

I have always had a tough time getting a nice kick sound off of the korg recorder. I think I am going to switch to a protools setup in the near future though to utilize some plugins that I think would help me out a lot.

Thanks for the feedback!

i think the "mush" of guitars is because the lead riff is too fast for the amount of feedback on the delay. Maybe rerecord the lead guitar with less feedback on the delay. i think the all the levels on the vocals could go down a bit and once you get an actual bass riff in there i'm pretty sure this song could sound pretty good.

ditto on the snare and kick sounds and levels. i think the rhythm guitar could be more punchy sounding. once the chorus kicks in the guitar gets lost and i think thats also causing the "mush"
