Don't stare at the eye.
This is always my favorite part--setting up for a new session. It's hard to see 'em with all the crap in the background, but I've got 5 of my preferred vocal mics ready to audition. It may end up being none of these--but I'll bet I could pick which one it will be. In any case, I'm looking forward to finding the best mic and dialing it in.

From left to right:

1) a very neutral to ever-so-slightly bright condenser
2) a world class dynamic
3) a slightly more bright than #1 condenser
4) a very warm ribbon mic
5) a thicker, more "rootsy" condenser

Of course, we're supposed to have some wicked weather here--snow, ice, and general wintery death--so the session might not happen at all. If it doesn't, I'll do a spoken word test just for kicks and grins and post the various tracks.

Very cool man. I'm not often jealous of people's rooms and setups, but I am of yours. Good luck.

Thanks dude. I have fun recording in this room. I just wish I could do it more often.

Yep, the wintery death has besieged us. No recording today. But hey, I'm gonna go play in the snow and ice on my ATV! Not a bad trade!

Lol. Nice. It's about 80 degrees down here. :D

80 degrees? Shit. That's why I try to book a trip south every year--well in advance so I have something to look forward. Nothing this winter, as we're setting aside our pennies for a wedding later in the year. But I've got a cottage right on the beach on the island of St. Croix with a couple days of deep sea fishing booked for next January. I'll send a pic or two and mercilessly mock your 80 degrees...

Lol. Sounds nice. I don't know if it's actually 80 down here, but it sure aint cold. It's warm and muggy. I'm in shorts, slip-on vans, no socks and no shirt. I'm Spicoli today. :D

Damn! I just put on a camo overall and hunting boots! And I'm just going out to check the mail! Screw you Spicoli!

Dude, all I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine. No shirt, no shoes, NO DICE!

Yes...I feel the same way.
There's always the most juice flowing a the start of the sessions and during the laying down of initial tracks....when things are still somewhat raw and still looking for the "gel" factor....then once you're well into a production, it becomes more of a process/craft thing.

I agree about your room being one of the nice ones on HR.
So like...maybe I missed those posts....but weren't you planning to move/sell your place and along with it that nice studio you built couple of years ago?
This is still that same room...right...?...just from a different angle, looking back from your mix desk...
...or is this a new house/new studio space...?

So is it only one vocalist or a few for this session...?..or is it for your own vocals?

Hey Miro--

This is the same room. And you're right, it's looking back from the desk. This session is acoustic guitar, some piano, and vox. We've already dialed in the guitars and piano, and recorded some scratch tracks, so now he's ready to sing. And yeah, it's just one dude. I think either the C414 or the SM7b is gonna suit him best, but we'll see.

And yes, I am moving. But this will be a slow process (which is why I'm still here). My property is rather unique, and to get the right price, we'll have to take our time to find the right buyer. It's a 6000 sq. ft. custom home (we built it) on 25 rustic acres. Two outbuildings and numerous farm implements included. To us--it's worth a ton. But to the average home buyer, it's nuts. So we have to be patient and wait for the buyer that agrees with us!

I don't see how anyone can turn down property that also includes numerous farm implements.... ;)
