Even though we might not agree on everything, we are still all pretty nice guys here. We haven't assassinated anyone in a long time.

...Roy...is Scott still up at MXL?...he's a great guy...I reviewed a few of the earlier MXL mics here on HR.com with Scott's assistance (loaner mics)...he also helped me locate the last V77s in stock...very cool fellow...

Scott`

I was able to pick up a V77 used here at HR on the want adds.
This is a great microphone that was modded in Canada and when I got it I installed a new tube (very difficult) but worth it.... now this microphone is a monster.

MXL has continued to make vast improvements to their microphone line. I have found so many useful mics in their line that we're almost a walking advertisement for their products.

The MXL 603 is a good substitute for a Neumann KM184; the V77 works fine in place of a U87, and the MXL V69M, V67G, the 960, the Genesis, and the Revelation are all great variations of the larger, old Neumann and AKG mics. Are they exact Neumann replacements? No, but they get the job done - and that's what counts (at least, with us).

Our take on the MXL line is pretty simple: we get a lot of value out of them. If you don't, get rid of them and find something else that will satisfy you. You may wind up spending a lot more money, just to get a little bit better.

Mics are very personal beasts; something that may work for you in one application may not work for anybody else in a similar situation. For us, the MXL microphones have been a Godsend; they work well and they've been reliable. And MXL has been great at solving any customer problems - fast!

You can't ask more of a mic than that.

It's a D19. I fixed one problem it had but on a second readjustment I wound up breaking one of the fine hair like wires that goes into the "capsule". Now there is no lead coming out of it and it's useless.

I'm not sure if I have terminology right. I'm having a problem distinguishing between the term capsule, membrane or diaphragm? The wire I broke is from the thin molded plastic membrane that receives the initial signal. That has two hair like wires coming out of it and that is soldered to two bigger wires to the coil.

D19? Ouch! Very rare indeed.

I would say keep your eye out for a D24. Same capsule, but then you'd have to render a D24 inoperable. I have a friend I can ask in case there's a method for surgery to the diaphragm wiring.

I'm not the type of person that leaves things be. I destroyed the capsule trying to find some remnant of wiring left. I would need a whole new one now I guess. :o Let me know if you find out any other mics that have the same one. I've heard the d190 does. But I'm not sure it's true or not. The D119 does but they are even rarer than the d19.

...I agree whole-heartedly...and rather than scraping them, tube swapping and minor mod tweaks take these mics up a couple more notches...both my V77 (with NOS GE 6072 upgrade) and my V67G (with JJ Audio tweaks) are superlative values when compared to the cost of high-end counterparts...;)
