Hi folks, Im a newbie here. Been reading through the site, and decided it was about time I got some advice...

Im building a new studio for a community project. The room is 18" by 31" with a separate room 18" by 10" suitable for a control room.

It also has a corridor that I may double up as a vocal booth.

Its a pretty large space at over 4000 foot cubed.

I do have a Degree in Sound Engineering, and worked with live sound so i understand the equipment side of studio design however I am a bit baffled by the acoustic element.

I understand the basic ie diffusers etc but bit confused as how to implement these into my space.

Its a pretty good space but structurally its a bit problematic. I dont have any surrounding buildings so keeping the sound in isnt a problem but it is on the first floor, so the floor's not concrete.

It also has 7 average size windows, three on one side, four on the other.

I have a modest budget.

Currently, I have bass traps sorted, a cloud planned for over the drums, and im considering adding diffusers to the walls behind the kit.

Personally i am a big fan of the studios of the 50s/60s and Sun is mecca to me. I would like to have to room slightly live opposed to dead feel. And i also like the rough and ready way Sun recorded, i.e the room was not technically perfect. This may be a mistake on my part, and i may be fantasising a bit, but if I could incorporate an experimental aspect to the studio by using movable gobos and blankets covering amps etc I would very much like that.

I would really appreciate any help you guys could give, Ad

I'd start by learning the difference between INCHES and FEET. (just kidding ya!:D)

Second, I'd go here...

JH Brandt - Recording Studio Design & Acoustics Home

John is a member here and knows his stuff. Tons to learn on his site.

Third, I'd buy this book.

Amazon.com: Home Recording Studio: Build it Like the Pros (0082039530345): Rod Gervais: Books

Rod is also a member here. And he too knows his stuff.

Forth..go here.
RealTraps - Home

Ethan is a member too. And HE knows his stuff as well.

All that should keep you busy for a while. If you have specific questions afterwards, well, we'll be here.:D
