Remember. I posted "you can get similar tone..."
Meaning if you have the experience knowing what sound (ala U87) you're aiming for, and the AE chops-then it will be pretty close.
For example, many vocals were cut with a RCA 77 ribbon, then the high end EQ was boosted with a Pultec="sounds just like a U47".
The photographers loved the U47 in studio shots, whereas many AE's of the 50/60's preferred the RCA 77. This was because the U47 brought out sibilance in many vocalists, including Frank Sinatra.
Budget hint...
IF you can find a working EV 666 or 667, along with a nice parametric EQ (like a DBX 242), it's gonna be fairly close to the U47 style tone.
