Neumann TLM49 New Mic: How does it sound?
Hi all home recording people
I am thinking of buying the New Neumann TLM49 mic
1. Has anyone used the NEW Neumann TLM49 mic?
2. How does the TLM49 sound compared to other mics if so what were the other mic used in comparision to the TLM49?
3. Please can you discribe the sound of the Neumann TLM49 including the good or bad piont in detail?

Thanks in advance

Quick reply....doesn't sound at all like a TLM 103, which means there isn't a whole lot of "added" sparkle...that's a good thing....fairly flat sounding, kind of thick (like what a tube mic does, but no tube here)....probably not the best for a low. bassy voice, but with the right "clean" pre it could be magic even on that...I need to have some other voices in to the studio before passing final judgement, but it is fairly "rich" sounding....but not really what I think it's trying to emulate (U47)...not much is though, and you do get what you pay for....if you're looking to give a yes answer when they ask "Do you have a Neumann?" it might be just the ticket...those same types tend to be impressed as well by "big" mics and this has a fair heft to it....I wanted one Neumann I could afford for this reason, and the 103 didn't float my boat at all, so I'm giving this a "workout" before deciding whether to return or not...right now, I'm 70-30 in favour of keeping it...but wouldn't do it if it was only for my voice.

thanks,

BW

It is very smooth, very warm. Your original post doesn't really explain why you're interested in THIS mic. What else have you tried, and what have you liked? What all will you be recording?

I think this mic may not have the sparkle to it that you may be used to if you've been trying out mics. But that is a good thing. It's not hyped like so many others. I think it sounds very natural.

It is not a hard mic to find in stores, so I would try it out. Compare it with others that you've at least heard comments on so you can gain a reference point. My opinion? I think it sounds great, I want one. Best sounding Neumann mic I've heard without going to the heavy hitters.

One note: another mic that sounds very much like the TLM49: the Rode NT2-A. Very similar character, a grand cheaper..

When you say in your post ( probably not the best for a low. bassy voice, ) do you mean the Neumann TLM49 has a lot of low end or has not got a lot of low end, therfore probably not the best for a low. bassy voice ???????
cheers. :) :)

Johnish,

What I meant above was, the TLM49 has a nice, slightly thick bottom end, not really flat sounding to my ear (although it technically could be)....not sure if there is a boost on the bottom, but with a naturally low end in my own voice, I don't need any lows added from the mic (or pre)...my guess is (haven't tried it on anyone else yet) if your voice is middy or even possibly thin, this mic could be a good choice as it will naturally add some "timbre" without having to eq it in....I might be a little worried if your mids are harsh, as I don't think this mic would like that, or deal with it very well based on further tests I did this morning...I will say I've decided to keep it as I'm convinced it is a good "companion" to my pair of M930's...doesn't do what they do, but stood side by side with them in a general "quality" of sound comparison today.

Best of luck, as they say you really have to pick a mic for what its application will be...if it's your voice, you should try it first if you can...or buy it like I did and take your chances....looks like it worked this time for me, hasn't always (I've "sold" some stuff in the past, if you know what I mean!!!)

I think it's a very articulate mic. There may be mics that sound like it a lot cheaper but this mic picks up the a whole lot of detail and that is the difference between it and "some" others. I have never bought a Neumann, not because I can't afford one, but I always thought I liked the sound more with others, until I tried this mic.

In this thread under NoEgo, I posted a vocal, with a deep register to bring out the proximity effect at 6 inches and from 12 inches without.
I know it's not the answer for everything, but a person could post all day everyday to let everyone hear what they want to hear.

Do it quickly before Neumann wakes up and figures it out and jack the prices.

They can't possibly jack them any higher - they're already overpriced.

I do not think this mic is overpriced at all. I really like it alot. I am extremely happy with it and consider it the best investment in a microphone I've ever made.
