needing a 6-8 chnl mxr with nice pres and eq...

i know these newbie threads are annoying, but anyway....
i'm trying to get some decent sounds, and recently got a tascam atr-60 2 track off of ebay. right now i only have an audiobuddy and the shitty mixer section of my yamaha mt4x, and i'd like to spend under $400 on 6-8 channels of really nice pres and eqs. i've been looking at spirit folio 12:2s and mackie 1402s, but i'd like to hear a couple more recommendations. i've heard a lot of bad shit about behringer, but other than this i know nothing. anything is appreciated.

so you feel the 1402 vlz would have better pres than a spirit folio? how much difference would i hear between vlz vs. vlz pro? once again, thanks for yr input.
 
I can't really compare the spirit to the vlz pro because I've never used a spirit. But I can show you what my drums sound like through the mackie's.

yeah, the drums don't sound bad at all. so what else was in the signal chain? also, would you care to give a quick rundown of the mics used? thanks again.
 
Beta52 on the kick, sm57 on snare and toms, rode classic II as single overhead or room mic. Eq and compression added later in cooledit pro. But all through the mackie vlz pro preamps.

Some more suggestions:

not great ones:
-Behringer MX1804MX (6 pre's, 4 stereo channels, 2 aux paths, dig. effect, 7 band graphic master-EQ)
-Behringer MX2004A: (almost same, but 8 pre's, no FX, no graph-EQ)

Better: Spirit Folio SX (12 pre's, 3 aux, 100mm faders, 8 direct outs) ($350-450)

Better: Spirit M8 (8 Ghost-pre amps (said to be better than VLZ Pro), 8 direct outs, 4 aux, 100mm faders). But this comes at a $550-600 price tag.
 
The Preamps are just about as good -- whichever board you get. They're both good in the preamp department.

The Soundcraft will have much better EQ and just about everything else.
 
what i'm wondering is...do you have to go to the m series to have better pres than a vlz pro? the f1 and sx have ultra-mic pres, which i'm assuming is their competition with the xdr shit....

Definitely the soundcraft...good mic pres, good eq, good console.

eh..which one? any? does that include older ones (200 series)?
 
Full Compass has the M8 for about $530 and the M12 for $618. Soundcraft has recently dropped prices. There's an M12 in my future.

Magpie is right

I noticed it in Holland too. M8 used to cost around $700-750, now it's $615. :) But $615 is also gonna buy me a lot of Audiobuddies... ;)
 
ok, couple more questions about some mixers i've found for under $350. one is a "studiomaster" brand board. anybody heard of this or have any experience with it? also, how about tascam mixers like the m-216? ok, thanks again.
