For some of my material I'm looking for a very smooth and even bass sound like the sound Keith Duffy got on The Corrs "In Blue" cd. Currently I'm using a Warwick Thumb bass through a Sansamp bass DI and then through a Focusrite channel strip for some compression. Overall it sounds good but seems to be lacking some presence and punch. I guess I'm still looking for the extra something to give the bass the quality sound I want. I've read about the Avalon U5 and maybe this is what might get me where I want. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Record the DI and a bass amp and mix the signals together. Gives more tone than just DI alone IMHO... set the volume on the bass amp fairly low, tilt it back a bit and make sure nothing is rattling and you should be fine.

I agree with combining the di and mic'd signals.
Personally, anything im recording that really needs a great sound, gets mic'd as far as bass goes.
