Hey guys...Just got a Focusrite Voicemaster. I hear such a difference while I'm tracking. I never understood how much of a diff you could actually hear from a pre-amp. But the smoothness is unquestionable.

I decided to re-do an older song of mine instead of experimenting with a new one. I left the vocals flat, no eq., so we can get an idea of how the pre sounds on it's own. It's a quick mix that has to be re-done. along with a few bad vocal lines.

I'll give you guys the low down on the features, etc... in my next post. Let me know how the vocals came out on this one. (I re-did the guitars, too, with my "newer" set up, so let me know how the guits sound also...)thanx.

Awesome!

Very very very nice! I liked that song alot. Great mix (although I'm a recording newbie so take it with a grain of salt). Keep it up, that rocked!

Thanx dude, newbie or not, your opinion is valid. Much appreciated.

I got to stop making threads at 2 am. I wake up, it's on page 2!

Most of all it sounds as if YOU have more confidence in your vocals through the pre.
This is a good pop rock sound Rami.
Well done A.P.U.
There's a very strong alt. quality to this recording in particular.
GOOOOT verk mon.

Nice sounds Rami....got a pic of the machine? :D

I hate you for the use of your voice...... (j/k)

This sounds really good. How did you process the vox? How many layered tracks are in it? What mic were you using?
To me, it sounds very smooth. Very nice.....bastard.... :p

There's definitely a difference using this pre.

Even without effects, I would say it's applying some mild compression, and a tone that I can only describe as smooth. (That elusive sound we look for).

The vocals are quite intimate but still sit well in the mix, don't hear any but is there reverb/echo at all?

The tone is not as bright as before, but still cuts nicely through the instruments - and that's without eq!

Are you sending the output of the focusrite into your board or are you going direct to computer? I remember you mentioned had a 16 or 24 track board that you recorded to - does it have hard drive too? Sorry, I'm just wondering about the impact of sending a pre through a board and whether it affects it any....

Guitars are sounding good with the new setup - will you be trying the guitar mic through the pre to see what it does?

Oh and the song is very cool, getting lots of Beatle's type feel from this one. Excellent writing....Very nice... :D :D :D :D

Listening on pc speakers so..

Vocals sound really good on this. Great tune man, you can sing bro! Enjoyed this much.

Thanx for the comments guys....all good points.

RayC, you're so right and I thought it was my imagination, but I was recording and thinking "everything seems easy". Maybe the pre helps and maybe it was just a good day.

Dogman, there are no layered tracks here. It's one vocal track, except in the chorus where it's doubled. I can't find a pic for some reason, evenon their site.

Ido, you're right, I do find it lacking a bit of that "sheen" in the high end. But, I must say, I just got this thing and if there's something lacking in the sound, chances are it's my fault, not the pre-amp's. The soft intro had only a bit of reverb and the rest of the tune has more reverb on delay on the vox. You might not notice them, but you would if I took it away.

I have the Focusrite going into my TASCAM 2488. I barely compressed on the way in, but added some at mixdown.

Freshears, thank you my man. I never thought of myself as much of a singer, but I'm glad it doen't scare anyone away.

Can't wait to try my guitar through it!!!

Well actually, let me be more precise. The lead vocal track is one track, but a few times in the song it's doubled up for a line or 2. Then there's the harmonies, etc...

Vocals sound great man. Has a real pro quality to it, real smooth. Overall loved the song. I can totally hear this song on the radio, and thats a compliment (some people would yell at me for saying that)

Thanx Gary...Yep that's the unit. They have the sections stacked in that picture, but that's the baby!!!

Sounds great RAMI.
That is one of my favorites of yours. Now it sounds better.

I wish I could get my drums to sound as good as yours. :(

theres a studio around here that has one of these and made one of the worst sounding demos i've ever heard. i'm glad you got a good use out of it. those guys seem to have got a big credit limit at a music store and bought as much gear as they could and don't have a clue how to use it.

Timboz, thanx man. I only use 4 mics and the overheads aren't the greatest. I think the "trick" is that they pretty much sound recorded the way they do live.

Tre...I guess any equipment in the wrong hands can really affect someone's opinion of the equipment. I'm no expert, but I guess I dont try to do more with something than my limited recording skills allow me to.

I kinda like the smoother highs on this, don't think it need much more highs on the eq - but I have a feeling that if you eq it with more highs, it will stay smooth ;) ;) :D .......
