New Original Tune - I’ll get my shoes (rock/alternative/shoegazey?)

I tried to even out the vocal levels and take a little of the vocal’s harshness out. I also added some verb onto the tails of those held out vocal notes at the ends of several phrases. Also made it so you can hear the boom of the floor Tom a little better.

Really well written and performed tune - I would try a couple of things though - First what mic are you using on the vocals? IMO You need a Mic with a bump in the upper mids and a very clear high end - Almost sounds like you are using a Dynamic? - second the drums are good - the kick is especially potent - everything else kinds of splashes out - maybe replace the snare and toms with samples - The drums need a bigger space and driving sound.

What's wrong with using a dynamic on vocals? I find they work well. I use a ribbon, and I love it because you can cut the lows aggressively and boost the highs aggressively to really pin point a sound. But dynamics are pretty awesome on vocals IME.

I actually use a really nice $3500 tube condenser mic (ADK Z67). My favorite producer uses it all the time and I love his recordings. Funny thing is it’s a very upper mid-forward mic with a ton of detail. I promise you the problem is my singing and processing! I cut a lot of the high end and upper mids in an attempt to smooth things out. I also tried that Waves Silk plugin that I think took too much edge off. In fact, I probably have way too much processing on trying to compensate for my voice!

Also, dynamics aren’t bad at all. I have an old 60’s Shure unidyne that’s noisy but sounds great!

I love old shure 545s. Maybe trade that mic for a good ribbon like an aea. Super smooth. And You can get super aggressive with eq without weirdness.

The ADk is an amazing mic, this is not a great example of what it does! I started with the unidyne but it’s was a little too harsh for this particular tune I think likely because I was run out through a Joe Meek with too much of the “enhance” dialed in, and you can’t get that out! The ADk was way more clear/intelligible, and smooth. It’s running through an Empirical Labs Mike-e channel strip compressed pretty hard. I apparently rolled too much top end and upper mids (overcompensated) off this time. I’ll run it more neutral and go from there. I could also re-record and go for better vocal takes.

I have a Beyer M160 ribbon I use on guitars. Could give that a try next time. I also have an AT4047 condenser that could be worth a shot. It’s mellow and used on my outside kick. I have an Austrian Audio OC18 condenser I have under my snare at the moment that’s also a great vocal and guitar cab mic. Too many mics!

I wrote and recorded this yesterday. I was messing around with EADABE tuning. I stumbled on it when I was messing around with some chords rooted on the A string. Turns out I didn’t invent it and out lots of people have used it (of course). Super fun, give it a try!

A little slower than most of my stuff, but the tuning kinda guided the song. Fun stuff!

I’d love some mixing advice! Vocals are definitely my weakness. I’ve learned to tolerate my voice as having “character”, lol, but I definitely struggle to mix it well, especially getting the right volume. It always seems like when I get a good mix on headphones (HD650 and AirPods) but parts of the vocals seem too loud in my truck and on my Bose Bluetooth speaker. Is it common for vocals to sound quieter on headphones?

I’d also love to know what makes a song Shoegaze! Thanks everyone!

I’LL GET MY SHOES

I just walked into a wall
head like a brick
and you can watch it
fall on me

And a hole was left
just like my silhouette
and we haven’t even started yet
I’ll get my shoes…

I hope somewhere I can find
where I left them last
And the fault is really mine

And a hole was left
just like my silhouette
and we haven’t even started yet
I’ll get my shoes…

Very cool track. Reminds me of Weezer meets Blink 182. No complains here. Would love to hear what it sounded like to drop out guitars (or pull everything way back) at the end, or after the 2:00 min mark and maybe bring it back again. dunno. cool track.

Ok, so I dug in a little more this evening. I EQ’d the snare to get a little more crack. I had to compensate by pulling some of the upper mid frequencies out of the overheads to keep the cymbals from getting too harsh. I also backed off a little on the snare compression. I think it helped a lot.

I also looked at the main vocals. I added back the 1-2 dB EQ in the upper mids and highs I had previously cut out. I also noticed I had set the Soundtoys Decapitator pretty dark. I brightened it up a little and then put the mix a bit dryer. This helped with the vocal clarity.

So here’s where we’re sitting with Mix 4:

I think the Ribbon is darkening you vocals - maybe it’s in the style of music? - I just wanted clearer vocals on top of the mix.

I think you improved the mix quite a bit.

Having a listen to Mix 4 on earbuds. I like the progression. Track reminds me a little of Oasis, a band I'm not fond of but this is better. Vocals have a good clarity and pleasing tone. Nice jam

Awesome, thanks. That might be the first time anyone has ever said my voice has a pleasing tone! Haha!

Just listened to mix 4. I didn't hear too much that sounded out of place. Nice performances all around and cool guitar sound. My only comment would have to do with the arrangement - just seemed a bit monotonous to me. But maybe that's common with this genre? I'm not too familiar with shoegaze. Although, someone else mentioned Weezer, and that's a common element in their sound, too (the kind-of "all in all the time" sound).

Mix 4: Vocal's really clear in the midst of all that distorted guitar - good work. Great knucklehead pop - really engaging tune! I think you're pretty much there.
