Looking for any mixing help on this one. It’s always the same thing…getting vocals to sit right. Getting drums punchy. Right volume for guitars. Thanks for any insights!

Current mix (Mix 6):

Lyrics:

TO MY FRIENDS

I tried to hear you
But my ears are ringing
The years of strumming
And all the awful singing

You have to make it their way
And I am left in the dark
Why’d you have to move so far?

You know it’s funny but I can’t remember why we were so mad

You almost made it
But have you thought it over
I would never trade it
Friday cry on my shoulder

You have to make it their way
And I am left in the dark
Why’d you have to move so far?

You know it’s funny but I can’t remember why we were so mad
They were the best days ever had

But have you thought it over
Friday cry on my shoulder
They were the best we ever had…

Quite bright - and the drums sound ticky because of it - but that aside it’s great sounding mix - it reminds me of a band - but I can’t think of it at the moment,

Thanks! I agree with the clicky…assuming you mean the hats. I don’t know if I positioned my snare mic poorly, but I got more hi hat bleed than usual. So when I EQ’d the snare to add a little more pop/crack it brings out the nasty hi hat click. I tried to find the best balance and favored the snare at the expense of the hat. Might have to back it off a bit and just blend in a snare sample.

I appreciate the comment!

Love the punk vibe. Maybe back off on whatever effects you have on the vocals and they will cut through a bit cleaner. Bu vox could be up a smidge.
Excellent as usual. I was waiting for another one from you

Great vibe and nice chord changes. Punky but not derivative. Lots of light and shade. Nice job

Really, really like this one. Sounds great. Another dB or more on the first guitar in the break would be nice. That guitar is the voice of cool.

Thanks! I’ll jump back in and make those adjustments. Much appreciated feedback as always from the BTS!

I really appreciate the compliments. It was a fun one. I’m a sucker for finding just the right harmonics and if I could only have one effect the rest of my life it would be delay!

And I’ll inch up the volume on that guitar, thanks!

Sounds fine to me. If anything, a bit more level on the vocal with a little less effect.

I like it. It’s catchy, has this ‘I've heard this somewhere before’ vibe.

That’s two votes for less effect and more vocal level. I’ll see what I can do in the morning.
Thank you!

Ok fellas, tried to incorporate the changes you suggested. If I threw something off please let me know!

What a well-structured tune - builds, takes it down, brings it back up. All I heard this time was the tune. You got a winner here.

Awesome, thanks! I did what everyone told me to do…less effects, adjust volumes on vocals and guitars. I also EQ’d most of the nasty hihat from the snare mic.

I’m having a really hard time judging the low end. I feel the low end is a bit overpowering on the AirPods and in my truck. But AirPods are always bassy and my truck is new (I’m used to my old truck).

Should I cut a little low end from the kick and bass? A smidge?

Thanks again!

Hard to say (for me) I’ve only listened on my iPhone and wired EarPods. But compared to other music I stream through them your low end is in the same ballpark.

If anything I’d check your balance. It’s so minor, I didn’t even want to bring it up. But the right side guitar (s) are a smidge weaker than the left side. I thought it was just my ears, but then did a listen with my earbuds reversed, and it was now weaker on my left side.

Also when the song gets cooking there are parts where the drums are a little weak in level. (Maybe automation would help?)

I dunno. These are minor minor critiques.

I personally think it’s great and I’d be more than happy to call it done.

Great points. I always choose different guitar amps for each rhythm guitar take. One has more bite than the other. I should probably adjust the EQ a bit to be a little closer to each other, in addition to adjusting the volumes.

Excellent thought about the drum level/automation. I’ll take care of it.

Again, much appreciation. Very helpful advice.

Don’t fix guitars with eq (Imho). It’s good to have different guitar sounds rather than make them sound similar. It’s an easy fix with just bringing up level a tad.

Mix sounds good on my playbacks. Love that bass gtr sound.

I dig how you let that intro ride for a full minute before the lyrics kick in. Nice touch and works for this track.

That was fun. :thumbs up:

Thank you. I wrote this with live performance in mind, as a little instrumental break between songs. Kind of fun to have some longer instrumental sections. Also, I’m a big Cure fan so a long intro every now and then is great in my opinion!
