You should get one of these...it is also good for acoustic guitar screach...I bought mine for 20 bucks on ebay.

Definitely worth a look...thanks...it seems all the decent software de-essers cost big, big bucks.

Call me old fashioned but studio effects for me have to be hardware whenever I can get them...well all my stuff is hardware...I only use my computer as a wave editor and cd burner...the mixing and tracking is all done on a hardware DAW.

Interesting...thanks. Would you recommend the KSM32 for a male baritone...for softer...ballad type of tunes? Any problems with sssssssss's on that mic? Some mics give me big sibilance issues.

This is a very good mic for sibilance because it does not have the harsh top boost that so many low cost condenser have.

I have used in on ballads with very good success, but you never know about vocal mics until you try.

Paj: is the 9090 identical electronically to the v67...and is one of the capsules identical?

darrin: that's the one with internal Mogami wire. Do you think it really makes a noticeable difference with a very short length of wire? I'm pretty doubtful myself...probably just advertising hype.

I was assured via an email from MXL that they are identical mics except for the cosmetics (I have the V67g but not the V67i), and the fact that the 9090 comes in a case, not a box like the V67. At one time they were only available from MF. You can now go on the MXL website and compare the specs et al of the 9090 with the V67i---identical.

Right now, the MF is selling the 9090 for $70 and throwing in an "MXL premium cable."

I would suggest the V67i over the v67g if you can afford it. I had a v67i and sold it for money towards an M-audio sputnik.

Well, about a week with the sputnik and I sold it and bought the v67i back. The sputnik definitely sounded good and luxurious, but it didn't suit my voice I think - and that is what buying a mic is all about.

The v67i gives you the two capsules, and I often find myself using the bright one when I'm recording laid back airy vocals, and switching it to the warm when the high energy rock vocals come in (my voice becomes more edgy and sibilant).

I've really gotten good results with the v67i. It's also wired with Mogami, whereas I'm not entirely sure the mxl9090 is.

Paj: Thanks...I'll definitely look into the 9090.

cactuseskimo: Will the 'dark' capsule give you the identical sound as the v67g...are the electronics identical?

Has anyone tried the v67 and also the CAD M177/179? I'm wondering how they compare. The Cad is nice and neutral, but nothing to write home about...very similar to the AT3035...a kind of bland, 'vanilla' sound, IMO. Neither sounds as nice as the AKG D3800 I borrowed from a forum member to demo...at least to MY ears.

(same Mogami badge under both mics)

RE: V67/9090 v. M177/179:

They're definitely different and most people could probably pick out the tonal differences the very first time. I just ordered my third 9090 as a Christmas present for a friend/bandmate (percussionist). I previously sold him a pair of M177 mics because he would get great instrumental and vocal service out of them. I'll be giving him the 9090 because he cut a favorite vocal track using a V67g (and he'l have the alternate "bright" capsule to fool around with in his new, in-progress home studio). The M177 is surely more versatile, the M179 even more so. If you're lucky, both will work for your voice---but the M177/179 will surely work well for something.

Q & A re. MXL 9090

The MXL 9090 is wired with Mogami cable.

The circuit design of the MXL 9090 is identical to the v67i.

Many folks think a few modifications make the v67 mics much better.

Some of the electronic components in the MXL 9090 are actually superior
to the components in the v67 mics, and so don't need to be modded.

Also, the MXL 9090 has a single layer headbasket, so there's yet another
mod that isn't required.

With only a $100.00 mod, the MXL 9090 could be improved to the same level
as the modded v67 mics, which usually cost +- $200.00 per mod.

The amount of Mogami wire in a V67 is about two inches max in the signal path. Anyone who thinks that about of wire is going to make a difference need to see me about buying the Golden Gate bridge, because I'm selling it.

And this thread is old.

Mogami and MXL are both divisions of Marshall Electronics. I suspect all MXL's are wired with their own cable (not that it matters or makes a difference).

Great deal on the V67G. Got one from B&H Photo for 80$ a couple months back. Wanted to get back in to recording a little bit just for vox/acoustic guitar and maybe some electric and this does a very good job. Much better than the my Rode NT1a ever did.
